Since my husband only takes 1 vicodin (750 mg) before P/T, and maybe 1/2 before bedtime, can he now go back on his Aleve, which he took 2 a day every day before the operation?
Thank you.

If he feels comfortable taking Aleve-- go right ahead. the only time I ever use Aleve is when I'm working or driving or doing PT. I take Vicodin when I'm at home. Actually, I've been on Vicodin for 6 months when I had my LTKR and I used Vicodin for PT...and I'm trying to figure out HOW I manage to drive myself there LOL

Really, it's more of a personal choice. It's really up to your husband. sounds like he had a better tolerance to pain, and didn't want to get addicted to Vicodin, which is understandable.

As long as he stays within the prescribed dosages for Aleve (one every 12 hours), I think he should be fine. It's understandable that at this point in recovery he still needs the prescription pain med before therapy and at night. Those are the two toughest times. If you are concerned about addiction to the prescription meds, don't be. It just doesn't happen when a person is taking them for actual pain. But since there is a physical reaction in your body when you quit taking them, be sure and cut back slowly - like to none at bedtime and half before a therapy or workout session. But given his back pain, I'm thinking he may need to stay on the stronger pain meds for a while. He does need to try and stay as pain free as possible.

Jamie: He has always taken two. Do you think 2 is okay? My main concern was can you mix vicodin and aleve?

Well, I just read on the internet there is no drug interaction between vicodin and aleve. It said it is okay to take the two. But there is a drug interaction between tylenol and vicodin.

So he has been taking 2 every 12 hours before? Did his doctor tell him to take a double dose like that? Or is it that he takes 2 at once every 24 hours?

That's still within the guidelines on the label. If he has never tried taking 1 every 12 hours, why don't you have him take the 2 for the first day's dose and 1 every 12 hours after that. The label says not to exceed 3 pills in a 24 hour period so you would be within that on the first day and right at the recommended dose daily from then on (1 every 12 hours). But if that doesn't work and the 2 pills once a day works, I'd go with what works.

Like anyone who takes NSAIDS for any length of time, you should have your family doctor (or one of the docs) monitor his blood levels just to be sure there are no problems. There shouldn't be.

Pre-surgery, Aleve liquid gel caps were my drug of choice. They worked really fast.

Aleve works best for me too. Everyone is different, I guess. What works for one person sometimes does nothiing for another.

Glad I could help you, ouch!

The thing you have to worry about is taking acetominophen which is really hard on your liver. (Hence the new FDA warnings on Tylonol PM, etc.) Vicodin and many other Rx opiates have tylonol matched with the opiate since they enhance each other - so you get sort of a 1+1=3 effect. So you don't have to worry about naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen with vicodin. Of course rather than your liver you'll be hard on your stomach.

It's always something.
