I will be flying (by plane) next week and was wondering if I will have any problem getting through security. Does anyone have any insight on this?

I believe it has been known. The suggestions others came up with were to make sure you get your little card confirming you had a hip replacement from your surgeon, tell the air port security before you go through the gate that you have an onboard prosthesis and make sure you are wearing clothes that can easily be slipped down to show the scar should the need arise!

BTW - the risk of a problem with the security alarms is to do with the bulk and material of the implant. Titanium doesn't because it's light weight and most hips don't because they don't have the overall bulk. Stainless steel knees (apparently) are the biggest risk and even then it depends upon the sensitivity of the scanner being used.

Hi,
I didn't have any problem. I was on a plane to Washington, DC not even 4 weeks out from my surgery. I have a ceramic head, metal post and metal cup, not sure of alloy. I told the TSA person that I had just had hip replacment and didn't know if I would set off the detector. I didn't, and I even have 4 large stainless steel screws in my spine. Even if I had they would just take you aside and wand you anyway. Those little cards from the surgeon don't matter, they will still wand you if you set off the machine. Just allow a little extra time in case.

Hi
i flew for the first time with my new hip last week. Nobody seemed to want to see my card. I was sure I was going to set off the alarm. Had my youngest 2 with me.
I did not set off the alarm, the security guy said if it didn't go off at Los Angeles, it would not go off anywhere.
Each of my kids set off the alarm. It was quite funny. My son had his cell phone in his pocket and my daughter had a wrist brace on!!!

So, in Florida on the way back, I set off the alarm, the kids didn't.
They took me aside, offered me the option of going in a private room. I declined. Totally wanded where everything beeps (snap on shorts, bra strap) Then I got patted down, really no big deal.
I have a ceramic ball and x-linked poly cup.

Hi,
I asked my doctor about getting a card for traveling. His comment was "if the accept the card, don't get on the plane." I've haven't flown anywhere yet. It was helpful reading all your responses so I know what to expect.
