For some inflammatory conditions like ilo-tibial band syndrome, it is possible to get some relief by doing what a really good massage therapist or chiropractor would do which is this:

Sit down and stretch out the affected leg. Make a tight fist of your hand and apply the finger knuckles to the most tender area until it really hurts, then press just a little harder and start making circles around that area.

Where it hurts most, work it most. Within a few seconds you should find the pressure a little more tolerable. Keep working and extend the area wider, up and down the leg as far as the painful area extends. First time you do this, do it for about 30 seconds. Each time you do it, try to do it a little longer than the time before. Perform this massage between 5 and 10 times a day.

As time passes, it should be less painful to do. If you are doing it correctly, as soon as you stop, the pain should cease and the condition should feel more comfortable. If you find the pain persists after you have stopped, you are either doing it too hard or too vigorously. It should NOT hurt once you have stopped.

Alternatively, an Omni massage ball can be helpful instead of knuckles!
