hi everyone,i have just been told by my consultant that i will be needing a knee replacament.we havent yet gone into wheather the procedure is going to be partial or full but my question is generally what sort of activities will i no longer be able to do even if the opperation is a total success.any input would be much appreciated regards klinger.

Hi

I am having my rt total knee on November 27th. So far I was told that my only limitation after surgery is no kneeling or squating. My Aunt had double total knee 15 years ago and she was cliff diving with my kids this summer the only thing she cant do is kneel or squat.
I hope this helps!

Yep, that about covers it! Although, it has to be said that most of the kneeling/squatting limitations are cause by the scar which, in a traditional approach is midline down the leg (red line). In an MIS, the scars (blue line) are on the side so it shouldn't be so much of a problem.

many thanks debbi and josephine for the feedback will probably give the cliff diving a miss though!
will jogging or cycling be possible?also i should have mentioned that i have rheumatoid as well as osteo does this have any effect on the surgery regards klinger

Jogging is high impact and is therefore on the list of things not to do!! Walking is okay though.

The only real issue is if you have been on steriods for any length of time, it does cause demineralisation of the bones which might, in turn, lengthen the recovery and rehab. But your surgeon will take this into consideration as will your therapist. From the number of RA patients who have replacements done, it doesn't seem to be too much of an issue.
