Hi, I have a Birmingham hip resurface that has caused me problems since it was implanted 14 years ago but have never managed to convince my surgeon to take it out. Just recently I had a different surgeon look at my xrays to which he reported acetabular cysts & cyst formation around screws of the dysplasia cup, that could possibly be causing loosening of the cup, I have attached a picture of xrays to ask for advice of what can be seen on these. There is clear radiolucency around the cup & stem & different bone formation around the screw tips & now a gap between the 2 screws, I personally think it is loose but the surgeon has said it seems there is no clear loosening..? I’m in so much pain & just want this hip out.

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your struggle for answers. You have come to the best place for answers, advice and support as you get this sorted out. Take care.

Your image is badly distorted so doesn't present me with an xray of diagnostic quality. So I am unable to verify his diagnosis but I can verify that the cup is loose and that without a word of doubt.

"Out" won't be an option as you can't be left with nothing but you do certainly need it replaced and most likely with a regular hip replacement.

Thank you so much Josephine for your reply. I will attach a picture of a previous xray that shows the difference now shown between the screws that were not there previously.

I am now thinking it’s time to change to a new surgeon as I am not getting answers where I am and I'm just watching years of my life roll by being in pain & depressed.

I am so pleased I found this site. Thank you

I take it those screws were inserted to 'cure' the cysts he saw?

Sounds like an excellent reason to move!

If you would tell me the name of the surgeon you are presently seeing and out of which hospital, I will gladly search you out another surgeon for you to see.

And gosh! I see you are in my neighbourhood! I'm in Houghton le Spring!

Hi, I can’t believe you are so close..
The screws in hip have always been there as I have hip dysplacia, but if you look at the last xray I posted compared to the first one which was my most recent there is now a gap between the screws which I would think would indicate to the surgeon that it had loosened?

I’m now considering a appointment with Mr Nargol who specialises in revision hips or do you have any suggestions.?

Not yet because you don't have enough posts. You need 5 posts before you can use the PMs.
Why not email me instead? [email protected]

Hip resurface was originally done at Freeman hospital by Mr Holland, but I am now under the care of Mr Partington at Nortb Tyneside hospital, @Josephine do you have any recommendations for revision surgeons in the Nortb East.
Thank you

Statistics: (primaries/revisions) in order of preference
James Holland, Freeman Hospital 251/32
Andrew Port, James Cook University Hospital, MIddlesborough 219/33
Paul Partington, North Tyneside Hospital 165/63
James Webb, JCUH, 159/21

Thank you Jo for your recommendations.
Why do you think the shadows on xray & loosening has not been picked up before? And do you have any advice how I should bring it up.

Because the surgeon didn't look carefully enough and/or pay attention.
