Has anyone else had this happen?

Friday night I was doing my normal ROM exercises on the exercise bike, and all of a sudden I had a SEARING SHARP pain in my leg bone right at the base of the knee. It was awful! I stopped and iced.

Seemed OK the next day.

Same pain occurred again yesterday evening...and it was to the point where every few seconds the pain would come and go. Lasted until I managed to fall asleep.

Seems pretty good this morning too, but a bit more achy than usual.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it a normal pain during the healing process? No new bruising has showed up, and no out of the ordinary swelling.

I have been busier the past few days--on my feet more, not only walking but standing (ironing, cleaning, etc.).

I'm at about 3.5 weeks now, and starting to really resume my life...but I'm a bit worried about the sharpness and intensity of this pain because it is quite different from the scar and tissue pain that has come to seem quite normal.

who is whining a bit right now!

I had plenty of pings and pangs. Sounds like an "awakening" of things to me. Painful and annoying, but normal. I still get aches and pains at almost 10 weeks. Sawed bones take time to not be so excited. i'd say as long as it goes and doesn't stop you from progressing and moving with any regularity.

I had many pains too in those early weeks. I'd say that with no unusual swelling and if it doesn't hurt when you put weight on your knee, it's probably okay. If you are concerned, you can always call your doctor's office. I'm sure they have a nurse or PA who could reassure you more.

Weezy,
I agree with Jen and Jamie and think it is probably what Jo calls your new knee "getting to know" the rest of your leg. Remember, they sawed off the top of your tibia(base of your knee) to make a new platform for the new knee and drilled holes in your bones to secure it all only 3 1/2 weeks ago. And you are walking on it and standing and IRONING????? (geez, girl!) so it may just be nerves and healing tissues connecting and maybe complaining a bit.....
It sounds like you are keeping an eye out for danger signs and doing the right things to take care of your knee..... but take it easy on yourself!

And you are walking on it and standing and IRONING????? (geez, girl!)

lol....I'm one of those really weird people who ENJOY ironing! Honest! And I'm realizing that you all may be correct--just overdoing it. I've been a bit more careful today and have not had the shooting pains.

But I did walk more!!!! Yippeeeeee! Went around Home Depot on my crutches--no scooter cart and did real well. I'm practicing my new "normal" walk and really concentrating on heel-toe-push-off. Of course, I came home, iced and napped...but hey--I walked from the parking lot to the back of the store and back to the car. and resting on my laurels tonight! :)

Weezy....you're not crazy. I enjoy ironing too! It's actually relaxing to me. Congratulations on your errands today! You are really doing fantastic.

ok.... I am not sure I would say I *enjoy* ironing, but I do it.... even the pillowcases and sheets..... which is maybe a little weird... but I didn't do any ironing at 3 weeks! I don't like it THAT much!

Weezy--- I am just glad you feel well enough to enjoy it! Congrats!

Seems you guys have it all covered as per usual!

I Enjoy Ironing So Much And Consider It Such A Special Chore That I Only Buy Permanent Press And Throw Away Anything That Proves Unable To Exisit Without Ironing. You Guys Are Wonderful But I Really Thought Ironing Went Out With Burned Bras And Women Getting The Vote. I Bet You Guys Look For Things To Press. I Love It And I Love You Guys. Ps I Have A Mangle Iron Too And Have Only Used It Three Times To Press Down My Hubbies Uniform Pants Pockets. Rowdy

Most of my friends think like you do, Rowdy! If it needs ironing, it doesn't get bought or used! I don't know why I love to iron--I hated it as a kid, when I had to use my mother's big old mangle to do ALL the sheets, pillowcases, etc., plus my father's white shirts. Does anyone remember when we had to sprinkle the clothes and let them sit a white before ironing? Steam irons didn't really work well yet...spray starch was expensive.

I might be because I love to sew, and its also a time when I get to watch TV or listen to music of my choice and NO ONE interrupts me!

Heck....I remember my Mom using a Coke bottle with a special cork in it tha had a metal top pierced with holes to sprinkle the clothes. Then she put them in the bottom drawer of the frig to stay until they were ironed. My Dad was in the Air Force and Mom ironed EVERYTHING....even his boxers!!! I'm like you, Weezy...I hated ironing as a kid, but I'm glad I learned how to do it and enjoy it now. When my husband and I worked, I even did his shirts with liquid starch in the washing machine and then ironed them. Quite frankly, my shirts looked MUCH better than when they came from the laundry. And I didn't tear up the fabric or rip the buttons off like the laundry did. My husband loved it. I used to do the sheets too. There is NOTHING better than sliding between newly laundered and starched sheets. But......now that I'm retired, I just don't have time to do that stuff anymore. Sounds backwards, huh! But we are so busy with things we want to do, many of the old home chores take a back seat. I expect to be even busier as my knee keeps improving. In the last couple of days, we've done a TON of planting in our gardens and cleaned up some areas of our yard that have had years of neglect. Man, THAT'S WORK!!! But my knee has done great. I can haul stones, bags of dirt and mulch, and dig like years ago! Next project will be to rebuild our deck!! We hope to start that in a month or so. I'm rambling.....better quit writing.....

You sure are doing great Jamie! You should come over and help us out! ha!

My knee is almost 8 months old and still hurts when I go up or down stairs. It does feel fine when I walk and feels strong. I think I'm going to have to live with this pain but it is so much better then before. My surgeon is doing a manipulation on the 9th when I have the other knee replaced so I'll be optimistic that I will get a little more extension and a little less pain.

When I was a kid my Mom used to have a sprinkle top that went into a Dr Pepper bottle for sprinkling the clothes. Then she would put them in the fridge. Don't know why she did that.

There wasn't room in the fridge for clothes at my house. I must be younger then most of you. All I remember that's been mentioned above is the liquid bleach and that must have been a military thing, huh Jamie? I never learned to iron my husband's cammies the way he could iron them. He would always go over them behind me so eventually I stopped doing them and he quit asking me to iron them. He grew up in a Marine family and then became one. Always a Marine.... I guess I was a sloppy civilian at heart! Oh well..... I never could get excited about ironing.

The reason they went in the frig is that the cool air was moist and kept them moist for ironing without them mildewing. You tell that stuff to kids today and they just look at you with a blank stare....my grandkids are not very impressed with my stories and knowledge (ha!).

I Can Remember My Mom Taking A Big Load Of Ironing Every Week To The Lady In Our Little Town Who Took In Ironing To Make A Living. She Would Bring A Load To Be Ironed, Picking Up The Things We Would Wear, They Had A Regular Assembly Line Going. She Sold Fresh Eggs Too And The Lady Next To Her Sold Tatting. My Mom Loved To Sew And Would Use Tatting Instead Of Lace On Some Of The Things She Made Me. I Would Bet Tatting Is A Lost Art Just About These Days, Unless Someone Does It As A Hobby. Oh, For The Good Ole' Days. Rowdy

Rowdy,
I remember as a 7th grader I would ride my bicycle to a woman's home about 3 miles away and do her ironing once a week. I would do it in the finished basement. I would watch TV and just iron....... I too love to iron when I have the time!
I still have the aluminum sprinkler top for the soda bottle! LOL!!
Thanks for the memory.......
Best,
Crystal

I remember those tops for coke bottles, too. My mom was a stickler for ironing. Everything, including dad's undies, was ironed. For a while she took it to a lady in town, but then we moved and she started doing it. Got a machine that you sat in front of to iron sheets and big things.

And I remember sprinkled clothes being wadded up in a ball and going into the fridge. Jamie's right on why we did that. It's hot and humid in Texas. Remember hanging out sheets to dry in the sunshine and how great they smelled when you got into bed?

And freshly ironed sheets were the best!

While we're on memory lane, I remember the milkman delivering milk to our door daily and the dry cleaners coming to pick up and drop off clothes. My doctor came to our house when I was sick. I hardly ever remember going in to the office until I was a teenager. Oh, and I had the stupidest remote control for my little TV. It connected with a tube to the TV and had a pump on it that you pushed really hard together (kind of like a squeeze box) to push enough air through the tube to turn the dial... and the TV was black and white. Oh, the good old days before push button phones, cell phones, PC, cable, etc.

A mangle iron is a machine that plugged into the wall that was essentially a round roll iron that had a press on it. You could slip in sheets, or anything and it would press it flat. The round iron part was about 36-40 inches long. It was like a piece of furniture. It would fold closed........
Best,
Crystal
