Today is 1 week since surgery. Mom has been in the rehab facility since Mon evening. She is so bored and it is very hard seeing her so unhappy. They are doing P.T. but not what I expected. I thought there would be more walking with a walker. They are doing a lot of other things. Flexing feet, turning the ankle, leg lifts. Showed her how to use the handy tools. Perhaps I am being too impatient. I just feel so bad like maybe I made a mistake by making her go there b4 coming to my house. How many people go to rehab verses going home right away. I thought she would be walking down the hallway and stuff by now.

I would have thought she would be walking by now!! You should ask and push. I was a right royal pain to the staff when my mum and stepmum were in hospital for various things. After all, if you don't fight her corner, who else is going to? They leave it much longer and she will find it a lot harder to get going. I'd to speak to her doctor and demand to know what's occurring!

On one occasion, my s/mum had a vaccum drain in a wound. It was there for almost 10 days (48hrs is the routine). So I demanded to speak to the duty doctor. Both he and the ward sister were sooo sniffy and told me outright that I didn't understand, how this was a specialist unit, blah blah blah. But I held my ground and said it wasn't good enough. They left saying that it was standard practice but the drain was removed the very next day!!

Some time you have to be assertive else the elderly fall between the cracks when it comes to this kind of care.

(Just my personal opinion, by the way)

I was in the hospital for 3 days, then went to a rehab facility for 8 days. I'm surprised she isn't walking by now too. I'm 65 and was up the very next day, walking with a walker and going down to an exercise room where I was introduced to a variety of exercise machines. I didn't always go with a smile on my face, but I went. When I got home, I went to PT 3 times a week and did exercises at home to continue my rehab. I was told the most important thing I had to do was continue PT.

I agree with Josephine. Be assertive, ask questions, don't take any bs regarding status (I'm qualified, you're just a daughter). Can your mom ask for a different therapist? I had one that would say, do this 20 times and then walk away to chat with friends! After 3 sessions, I told my doctor I didn't feel I was getting any real help and got a different therapist. This is too important to your mom. Go gettem girl!
