Here I am 8 weeks after TLKR and soooooo very thankful I have had the surgery, and thankful I made it this far, there were times I didn't think I would. Thanks to all the input from everyone on this forum. I still have swelling, some discomfort, some numbness and my LTHR from '07 isn't enjoying putting in the extra effort, (keeping an eye on that), but I like to stay positive.

Things I can do today that I couldn't do even two weeks ago....

~I can drive, yippee! Goodbye Cabin Fever!
~I can sleep for longer than an hour and a half and I can sleep in any position, with a carefully positioned pillow.
~I can do forward and backward revolutions on the stationary bike (for about 3 mins).
~I can swim, swim, swim. (My knee tells me when it's time to stop, and I listen :)
~I can go up stairs alternating feet, no rail, downstairs I still need the rail.
~I can have small excursions to the shop. (Saves money not being able to stay long :)
~I can feel a few spots of normal feeling amongst the numbness.

Hope this is encouraging to those of you just starting your journey of recovery.

Thanks again everyone.

Chris

OOPS the way that is written it sounds like I'm saying that I didn't think I would make it thanks to all the input from everyone on the forum, maybe I should have re read the paragraph before hitting post. LOL

Hopefully you all understood I meant it as a separate sentence, Thanks to everyone on the forum for their input, you have all helped me more than you could know.

Chris ;)

You can always edit your posts, you know. Just hit the button and when you've made your alterations, hit 'save'.

I am so pleased you are getting along so well. That is good news!

What GREAT news!!! It always feels so good to have these reports from people who write just after surgery and wonder if life will ever be good again. You are doing such a wonderful job in recovery!!!

Chris, it sounds like you're doing great... and at 12 weeks you'll feel even better and everything will seem easier. No need to explain about the down times... we've all been there.

I'm a little over 3 months now and I can see improvement almost daily.
Sandy

Thanks Jo, I'll remember that, there's bound to be more :)

Thanks also Jamie and Sandy I appreciate the encouragement and wish you all the very best in your recovery.

I agree no need dwelling on the bad times, it's comforting when you are going through them to know that it's all "normal" and you are not alone, but good to move on also and look forward to what each new day brings.

One funny thing that happens to me is I keep waving my hand over my scar to shoo flies away. Only problem is there is nothing there, must be the nerves healing, but it brings a great deal of hilarity to my daughter who delights in telling me there is nothing there :)

Chris

That's pretty funny, Aussie!!! You know, if it wasn't for our kids, we'd never know how crazy we are....

Great news Chris (is that male or female?) You are doing remakably well at only 8 weeks. Isn't great to be getting your life back? Take care... Sue

Female 49, greatly looking forward to 50 :)

Thanks, 50 is great, was there almost 5 years ago!! You anywhere near Sydney? I have a brother in law and his family out there. Would love to visit Australia and New Zealand one day, just need to win the lottery now :-)

A few hours away from Sydney, in a coastal area, beaches and bush. Just beautiful!

Yep any kind of travel takes the dollars these days. I would actually love to explore more of Australia myself.

Maybe I can set myself a task and see how many airport security systems I can set off, like people collect spoons from their travels. Hopefully you will get out here sometime.

Chris, or should I write Christine?

Chris

I have exactly the same experience. (The fly thing) especially if I am sitting outside.

By the way my recovery is mimicking yours. Being able to drive is GREAT and swimming is wonderful apart from the clicks from my new knees

I so totally enjoyed your list of things you CAN do! I have blown up several pages of a big box calendar, I plan to write each day in the box what ex. Idid, my pain level, and then, cross off the day with a big red X! Think that motivate me and act as a reminder of how far I've come . I know I'm going to need some visual reference, esp. on the bad, awful, what HAVE I done to myself days! Thing I CAN do is a great additional tool I plan to employ. thank you!

Thanks, I hope all goes well for you. Always good to look at what you can do and the good thing is the list keeps growing.

Best wishes

Chris:)

Hi again Richard,

Pleased to hear all is going well for you too. I don't get the clicking in the pool but I do get it when I have sat for a while and begin walking, or after I have been somewhere in the car.

"Click go the knees boys click, click, click". :) Are you even old enough to remember that song (Click go the shears)?

Keep up the good work Richfriz, and you are doing it in stereo!!!!!

Chris

Chris,
Thanks for posting the "can do" list. I am right behind you at 5 weeks post op.
My OS also gave me to ok to drive, but the weather has been so bad that I haven't ventured out on my own yet. It's 4 below zero here in southwestern Ohio. How is the weather in Australia?
I did a couple of outings out to lunch and to Bed Bath and Beyond to get a new coffeemaker. The shopping cart was a great walking aid. It's so great to get out, but I get tired pretty quickly. Each week gets better though.
I am now at 112 ROM and my extension is -2.
Keep up the good work! Kathy

Hi Kathy,

The weather here is going between extremely hot then a cloudy day. Usual summer in Australia. On the really hot days we generally get an afternoon storm. Today is cooler.

I can't tell you what my ROM and extension is, as I don't go to physio, but my ROM was 100 when I went for my 6 week visit and I know it has improved since then. I still feel my extension could go further but the OS was happy with it at the review.

It is good to get out but I still get tired also. I go to dinner and dancing with my daughters Tues, (They dance I watch) and go to a Trivia night Thurs with Mum, Dad and girls, and am weary when I get home even though not a lot of energy was expended. As you say it gets better each week though.

Good luck with your continuing recovery Kathy.

Chris

Speaking of ROM Jo, is there a way you can measure it yourself without one of those gadgets they have at physio or OS?

Chris

Not that I am aware of. You really do need a goniometer.
You can get one quite cheaply on Ebay for about $12
