Hi there
I've spent hours looking through this great forum and wish I had found it prior to my THR. I just want to ask your seasoned advice as to whether this sounds okay for 8 days post op?

I'm 31 years old and have required a LTHR due to Perthes disease as a child, and will get the other one done asap. I was wonderfully pleased with my initial recovery- I used very little morphine as it made me sick and was onto just co-codamol the next day. I got home the day after.

I feel my leg is very strong but I'm now getting a pain running down the top of my leg to my knee. It feels like it could be along a nerve. It was really bad last night but better today again, though it doesn't go away. I'm taking co-codamol regularly and it helps but doesn't give as much relief as I got from it while still in hospital. I can't take diclofenac as it upsets my stomach even if I take something to protect with it.

I wonder if I aggrivated it by trying to do too much yesterday? I went to a shopping centre, had lunch and shopped for maybe half an hour, so I've stuck to exercises and short walks around the house today.

Does this sound a normal sort of pain for this point in time and is there anything you would recommend to help it? I'm torn between pushing myself and taking it easy....
thanks, sorry this is quite a long post.

Hi E's Mum . I Would think yes if you did all that yest at 8 days oh my goodness I bet you are sore....I would be taking it a lil easier. At 8 days I would think still ice, take you medicine and relax.....I do give you credit for being able to do that, thats anmazing...But take care of youself you did just have a big ole surgery.....I hope you second one goes the same way.........I hope you get everything you want and deserve from this surgery.......A fanastic outcome....Keep us posted, and take it easy....Glad you joined us...

hi e,s mum you sound like your doing amazing so quickly.ive just recently joined this forum i think its great to read peoples experiences with there ops im on the waiting list for a rht thr i hope i recover as fast as you well done xx

E's

Yep you did way too much. Can't believe you even tried all that.

You should be resting and letting your body heal. Jo and Jamie
will be on soon and will advise you.

Ah that's reassuring, maybe I did do too much! I had built up to it though. I've been going out everyday since I got home and that involves two flights of stairs for a start, and have walked a bit further each day. I suppose yesterday's time on my feet was just a good bit longer and must have been just too far.

I was a bit worried that the pain had worsened as it was all so good to start with I was hoping things would just keep improving but I suppose there has to be some ups and downs.

Thanks for the kind words Texas and Tracie I'm sure all will go great for you too!

hey e. well i'm 2 weeks and my right knee is more aggravating then the hip its self. lol i attribute it to the fact that every muscle down my leg is being used differently. i'm going to ask my os today so i'll let you know the answer. now i do need to say mine feels just like a muscle not a nerve so it may be different. i also love to do to much. and went to a concert at 9 days post op and have really been going ever since. i even spent a day without my walker because we were at a cookout and i couldnt get thru the grass so i might have been walking on it funny. i'm all for ice and relaxing when it aches. this is my recovery time and i'm very protective of it. i let myself do as i please and feel up to. oh and i'm 36. so not that much older. your doing fantastic. wishing you well

I would say everything was fine except that shopping. I would say, even when your fully healed shop very little.
Thats my story and I am sticking to it,lol.

Very good luck E's mum!!

Too much too soon! Way too much. Just because you got out of hospital in three days doesn't mean you had minor surgery. People tend to think since they've been discharged they must be over the worst. Wrong! Very wrong!

Confine yourself to the house for another week at least. Take walks around the garden and up and down the street. Remember you are still at a very early stage. You must still have clips in, surely? Or Steristrips? Or a dressing at least? Don't go out until you have had all removed. Even then, take it easy. You need to rest a LOT and take more care of yourself.

And co-codomol is hardly sufficient for you at this stage. Ask your doctor for something stronger like Tramadol. And take it regularly at 4-6 hrly intervals.

You had this bad hip a long, long time - there's no rush to get back to normal life.

Oh yes - and welcome to BoneSmart!

Hello E's Mum and welcome! Early in my recovery, my physical therapy person recommended I not make trips to stores that would require a lot of walking around in them. Most of them are built with cement floors underneath that tile and that can be very hard on the muscles. Please take it easy on yourself, give it time. The one consistent message on this forum is slow and steady wins the race. :thmb: Good luck and keep us posted!

Gee sounds like you are doing alot early one. Better take Jo's advice. Usually pain tells us that we have overused or something is wrong and in your case you did have a major surgery. It took me some time to realize that. I thought I would be back to work full swing in 4-5 weeks lol. Boy did I wake up!! So, I went to PT 3 times a week and pampered myself some each week for the 6-8 weeks I ended up being off.

Yes WAy too much too soon. I had my hip replaced, came home on day 5 and did not go anywhere for 2 weeks. My first outing was for my 2 week check up at the surgeon's office. I did not even get dressed before that. Enjoy the excuse to sleep and rest and lay around. lots of healing needs to be done.
Pain will tell you that you are doing too much. You must listen to your body. Slow down.

Hi E's mum,
i had a thr and then spent 5 days in hospital, followed by 2 weeks in rehab under pt directed exercises.......the most walking I did was around the hospital and in the corridors......please slow down and take it easy.....the shops will still be there in 3 weeks!! incidentally I'm 42 and had perthes as a child too....

Well I didn't think I was doing anything too bad - they told me they didn't expect me to sit around at home when I was discharged and getting out could be good. I'm getting the dressing over dissolvable stitches removed today.

I do want to get outside and the garden isn't an option as it's down an extra flight of uneven stairs without a bannister.

I will take it easier but I have a 7 month old baby and want to get out and honestly feel up for it. I just clearly need to be careful not to overdo it.

Oh and incase it appears I'm a shopaholic I was buying a new home gift and new baby gift for some friends!

Shopaholic is fine.....we all have our passions....just think, before too long you might be able to buy (and wear ) shoes with heels and pointy toes....for many of us, walking around the shops has been a pleasure thats been too painful to do ....so when you can, don't feel guilty, and when its raining its actually quite a good place to get some flat walking in....although summer in Scotland is so pretty I imagine rambling would be quite pleasurable

Incidentally, I have 5 children and are keen to get on with it, but I have deliberatley slowed down ,because I didn't want to get myself into a painful relapse. It is difficult to carry a babe when your on crutches or walking frames etc.

Enjoy your new found mobility
Rachel
