Well it has been 8 days since I had undergone my RTKR. I feel better today than I had yesterday and know that tommorrow I will feel better then I had today. My suregery had taken 2h 27m's. A little bit more time than OS expected but we knew it wasn't going to be a quick procedure due to the amount of scar tissue an a little extra work I had asked of him (to remove several staples from prior surgeries). I had a Spinal and was very pleased with the out come, during the procedure the Anastheslogist who was a great man, visited me nightly ( I told him I was going to ask him to due the next one). It did take him several times and as he was inserting the needle he had said he was going to try one more time with a longer needle and if he couldn't hit it he would have to administor General Anas. He had gotten it, He said he was extremeley pleased with my reaction to the Spinal. Post op I had a self administered Dilaudid drip for pain every 6 mins and after the first12 hours would receive Percocet as needed (up to every 4 hours with 10mg of Oxycontin for a breakthrough). I have to admit I didn't feel a thing, I was walking the next day with less discomfort than I was expecting.

1st day post op I had felt good using just the Percocet every 4 hours with an occasional Oxycontin. Started uing the CPM machine, my OS did not feel that there was any clinical studies for it so advised it was up to me if I would like to use it. I had used it thinking that it could only help with the stiffness and bending. It put me to sleep each time. Used it until I acheieved 95 rom -5 flexion. ( Knowing this is not what I would do on my own).

2nd day I started using the restroom as I needed to and started working on stairs. I was amazed how good I had felt walking around and did laps through the unit.

3rd day I was told I would be released in the morning, I was able to get up on my own and I was able to use the stairs and restroom. OS suprised me by visiting me at 10 pm just to see how I was doing, he was dressed in more casual clothing so after he left I had asked the nurse if he was in on a Sunday evening performing surgery and she said I think he was just in the neighborhood and stopped in to see his patients so I knew 100% I had chosen the right OS.

Any way it is now my 8th day post op and I feel pretty good, the first few days home were rough, coming off the medication was the roughest for me. The first day home I was taken 10 mg of Percs as needed and I took 1 or 2 Oxy's and had the hardest night. I called and spoken to my OS and he told me it was the pain meds so I took his advice and cutback,,,way back. I tolerated the whole 6th day post op with 1 -5mg Perc, I had gone through a serious withdrawal, shaking, shivering, sweating, itching, stomach pains and emotions all over the place. Well I feel much better today and take my meds as needed, usually before Pt and at night time to sleep. Sleeping is not so great cause lets face it how do you get comfortable when you have to keep your leg in a certain position. I did get descent sleep last night, fell asleep around 4 and woke up around 10 am. Had Pt today and feel better with my progress.

So thats it in a nutshell. And Jo I had seen the Post and apologize and thank you all who replied.

Wow! That sounds like a cool recovery there, NuNeez. I am impressed! I look forward to the next reports. God bless you.

Glad to finally hear from you. Sounds like you've had a very good experience and a good Dr. Keep us posted.

Way to go, buddy! I'm so happy that you've got the worst behind you. Sounds like you're doing everything like you should be....you'll have good days and bad days....we're all still experiencing that.

Keep giving us updates.
Patti

Congratulations! NuNeez doesn't it just feel so good to have it over with knowing each new day will be better and better?

Wow nuneez, out on the 3rd day? I was in til the 6th. Are you off the Percs already? I had withdrwal last year from them, didn't want to go back on them, but as long as I come off gradually this time the doc says I will be OK. Your ROM is also excellent, I'm still only at 90 but I still have a lot of swelling, I am at 8 weeks, my PT isn't worried, says you can't push past the swelling (thank goodness, I'm too much of a crybaby for that). As mentioned in another thread, my friend din't get 90 until her 9th month, she has 130 now, 4 years on.

Hope you continue to progress the way you are, you might be the record breaker??!!

Maybe it is a new trend to get out fast? I had surgery Monday and went home Wednesday. PT didnt want me to go, but the doctor said he wanted me at home. I was fine with it. Just wanted my own bed and to be with my dogs.

I had surgery on Friday, went home Monday morning. PT came to my house for 2 weeks, then I was released to go to PT.

I would like to clear a few things up, the Thread was started while I was on Meds...I was out on day 4 post op, that is 4 nights, surgery Thurs, home Mon morn. My ROM of 90 was with assistance of CPM machine NOT MY OWN. It has gone to 70 on my own at day 8 with 2 perc's and PT. Swelling in my case is extreme. My leg is way to heavy to lift on my own, maybe an inch or 2. However swelling is going down fast, so far...OS said I "should" achieve a great ROM since part of the Pre Op problem was large fragments of bone under my knee which he ofcourse had taken out. I am not off the Perc's just cut back, I believe the Oxycontin is what really got to me. I stopped them cold turkey and waited 12 hours between Perc's at day 7. Day 8 post op (last night/this morning)I had taken 1-5mg 12am before bed (fell asleep around 1 am) at 5am when I started to wake up I had taken another Perc and then I went right back to sleep until 8am. I had then did without Perc's until 8pm (too long). So it was 12 hours. I will now take them when needed but as soon as the pain starts. I had did this to determine my "breaking point" I had a decent day with my knee (my gout in my toe is a different story). I will take the Perc's as needed and always take 2 before PT.
And as good as I know I am doing, it is still a rocky journey. I was just lucky that I can do what I can and try to do a little extra. Today I had gotten in and out of the shower on my own BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT since I have a high step in tub, but I know each day will get better (until I see my PT)... Thanks to everyone here!

It IS a rocky journey, Nu. You've had so many surgeries that you knew what to expect...that's a good thing. I had lots of swelling when I got home...leg was SO heavy that I would pick it up by my sock toe!! My PT made me stop doing that!
This kind of thing is a long haul....we'll all tough it out together.
I do know one thing...this forum is priceless. Can you imagine NOT having anyone to talk to about it?
Keep plugging along....
I think my lights are finally dimming....
night all

Thats great Nuneez, your recovery sounds similar to my own.Mind you I had 6 days in hospital cos I checked in on the tuesday my op was weds could have come out friday then it ran into the weekend so there was nobody there with the authority to release me.But now I,m 10 days post -op and walked down to my local pub yesterday to watch the big rugby games on TV with my mates ,1.2 miles not bad hey, mind you I got the missus to pick me up in the car later....Theres still a long way to go but I,m glad I the operation and remain positive, cheers klinger

Hey Nuneez, don't fret about omky doing 70 at your stage. I went back to 83 from 90 the other week, no idea why, but I got it back to 90 the following week. Still only at 90 week 8 but my PT is not worried, she said my swelling is stopping it at the moment, so I am still plugging along at the exercises as often as possible. It took a a while for the leg lifting too, then all of a sudden I wasn't even thinking about it. The worst part the first 2weeks was the terrible pain as I stood up while I still had the bruising, the blood all rushed down to the ankle and it was really, really painful to walk. This also deminished with time. Patti also experienced that I think.

You still walking with a walker or cane Klinger? I still use walker out to the car as we have so much snow, but the cane inside. If I go shopping I use the walker, it is one of my mum's and it has a seat on it so I can just plonk myself down whenever I need to. Wish I could walk down the road, roll on Spring!! Can't wait 'till I drive again, I still rely on my good friends to take me to physio appointmments. If the weather was better I think I might have tried it by now, but the roads are still bad. Enjoy the rugby, my hubby really misses it, they hardly ever show it over hear. My boys too, they used to play mini rugby since the age of 5, it wasn't played here in the schools when we came.

Sorry for rambling, I am waiting for percs to cut in so I can get some more sleep.
