Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Hi, Electric.judge....welcome to BoneSmart!!! So glad you joined our forum.

Several of our members have had partial knee replacements. For the most part recovery is pretty much like a total....sometimes a little faster. How are you doing??

We have several members from Australia and a couple from New Zealand, so your corner of the world is represented here! You should be hearing from others very soon.

Please post any time you have a question or concern. Or drop in just to let us know how you're doing and to say hi! We have an active family of folks who have been through knee or hip replacments and know exactly what you are experiencing.

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Good o hear there are a few others with partials here.
I''m sorry I posted twice.
Thought the first one didn't go through.

My pain was pretty mild and well controlled with drugs, but over the last week I've got new sharp pains when I first get up to walk.
PT put me back on crutches.

Seeing surgeon for first checkup on Fri.
Hope he knows what's going on.

hI Electric,
Hope all is well with your new bionic parts. They do keep us guessing during recovery though.
Curious about the electric in your name???:pzld:

Re: Saying Hi!

Another Aussie! Wow! Welcome to BoneSmart, Electric! I think, if you read around, you'll find a lot of BoneSmarties have had Oxfords - very popular knee and one of the earliest types to achieve world wide acceptance.

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Electric, I merged your two threads so that folks wouldn't get confused about where to post. I also deleted one of your posts because it was not needed once the two threads were merged. It was just duplicate wording. I look forward to hearing more from you about your recovery!

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Hi electric.judge,
Welcome to the best place to have your questions answered ! Like me, you found Bonesmart after your surgery.

I have an Oxford hemi as well, it has worked out well so far.

I had a lot of nerve healing going on at 8-9 weeks, small sharp shooting pains. Once the nerves got themselves sorted out, the pain went.

Keep reading and asking questions, someone here will have experienced what you're going through, and Josephine and Jamie are the experts who will pop in when necessary.

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Hi Electric Judge, I had a partial Oxford knee on 5/11. I had a fair bit of pain and stiffness plus bruising to start off with but have started to feel better the past 4/5 days. My ROM is 105 deg and the other calc, think its called flexion, where you straighten is - 2 so feeling reasonably positive just now and found this forum very reassuring. My main prob is quads inhibition due to pain, but the physio did wake them up marginally yesterday.
Hope you continue to be happy with your op, and can maybe identify pain when you see the surgeon tomorrow.
keep posting

Hi Ellen,
That nerve healing might be what it is.
It seems to be settling again. I think I expected to be having less pain....surgeon's promises don't always mean the same thing to everyone.

Hi Josephine,
You sound as if you've been in the wars.
I'm just hoping the gining of world wide acceptance for the Oxford Knee means it will be OK.
Have been hearing so much negative stuff from people since I had it done, I'm beginning to get quite scared.

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

What kind of negative? Because you had a partial? Well, true, they are sometimes a short term fix but not always. It very much depends upon the condition of your knee beforehand. I know of people who've been a few years with a partial and no plans yet to have a revision. Think positive!

A few people have said that "their"surgeon says a partial will have to be redone at some point. The OS who did my surgery said it's meant to last 15-20 yrs.
The idea of the partial in my case, according to him is that only part of my knee was affected by the OA.
I'm hoping he's right and they're wrong. :pzld:
All the literature I've read seemed to indicate he was, and the physios I saw, also gP said it should work for me.
I can only hope.

Re: Newbie 7 weeks post surgery

Yep - so many opinions, all different! My sil had a partial done and she's in year 3 and still very happy. It just depends if your surgeon is possessed of good judgement!

My surgeon seemed quite definate OA limited to medial compartment, and that Id be in with a better chance of successful total KR in 10 - 20 yrs rather than if I had to look at revision of an initial total. The partial was a lot more painful than I expected but am starting to feel better, and more mobile eventually once I wake my quads up properly!!!

Contrary to popular supposition, partials are no less invasive/painful than totals.
