For anyone who's been following my 2nd TKR thread...I've had a tough time with my pain meds and had to just give them up but then live with pain.

Now at 6.5 weeks the pain has gone!!! So I consider this a milestone.

Since I had "quad sparing" TKR I really didn't do any PT, just my exercise bike and those leg raise exercises. Yesterday I went to a water walking class, me and a bunch of really old people.

It was basically like a dance/walking class for an hour, got the heart rate up and I really worked some muscles like the abductors and adductors, and both my knees.

Afterwards I felt it. Not in pain but definitely new to my knees, but in a good way. So I will continue on with this.

Great post, Hollie. So happy things are progressing for you!

Hollie.......How OLD were the really OLD people in your aqua class? You better watch it or you may get clobbered with one of those sponge noodles!! :)!!

Hollie, you're doing so very well. I do admire your grit and determination.

OMG!!! You are so right Judles! I'd better watch my mouth...

I have to say they none of them looked a day under 89....

And yes, it's good to have workout ache but my knees also feel stiff, even after biking.

But my big thing was the surgery pain that took this long to go away.

I know I'm gonna get sponge noodled for this post....but actually I haven't worked up to sponge noodles yet....

Hollie....I heard the sponge noodles are the best part.!! Have fun! :)

Just how old where the "bunch of old people"

You were lucky to have joined the "bunch of old people"

Yep you are right I am one of the "bunch of old people"
I am 68 and loving it.

Most of my friends are in their 40's or early 50's. I was
encouraged by all to get the knee done because I was
getting to where I could not do what I use to do with them.
My youngest daughter in law 32 can't wait til we can shop and go places together again.

Also this old person was able to bend down and touch the floor one week out of surgery palms down.

My PT said she would not have guessed my age from the way I tackle my exercises.

Guess I feel much younger because I ALWAYS have younger folks around me.

Just wanted to let you know just because of age does not mean we do not do as well as younger folks and I think it is rude to say "a bunch of old people":hissy:

Loggon, Please don't let that OLDER people thing get to ya. (was a lil insensitive) You are always there for everyone. I think you are a terrific lady. You do better then me and I am younger. lol. Much better than me !! I only hope I am as active as you when I am 68. You Know 68 is the new "30".......lol.........Dont be upset.!!

Hey, sorry to have insulted anyone, I really didn't mean to. I'm nearing 60 myself and my husband is almost 90, so please give me a pass.

I did really mean they looked like they were in their mid 80s or above, so you sixty somethings and even seventy somethings aren't old enough to qualify for my water class.

I have to say it was a much more difficult workout than I thought at the time. Now, 2 days later, my knees are pretty sore. Maybe with the noodles one doesn't have to hop or spring off the floor of the pool as often?

My momma always said watch what you say it will come back to bite you in the b---.

Just kidding it is OK I am 68 and still have a lot of fun with grandkids and their friends and my kids and their spouses.

As I said most of my friends are in their 40's (same as most of my kids) or 50's.

I am going to start water therapy I think in a week. Need to make up my mind.

I really hurt my knee in that water walking class, I can barely walk and my PT now tells me I may have strained a tendon or ligament in my 7 month old knee!

Problem was my PT really did mean WALKING in water, whereas this water walking class was really a water ballet class, lots of hopping, crossing leg over leg. My PT said I hadn't built my muscles up for that sort of torque yet.

So I should have done what the other people in the class were doing, paddling around and actually walking in the water!

And loggon, it did come back to bite me!!!

As a former ballet dancer I wanted to perfect the choreography offered and thus got in trouble. Problem is I haven't done ballet in 4 years and my muscles aren't there anymore.

No more water walking classes for me until I build up more muscle.

Hollie

wow sounds like you really hurt your self. Sorry to hear the water did you in. hope you feel better

I do that water class as well. It is hard. I see some of these ladies, just goin' to town , real fast, there knees are by the neck. I am shocked. And here I am....No it just took awhile but my body got uesd to it, now its actually fun. I get alot more done in the water then the land part !!! Hope ya feel better soon.
Did they warm you up, lunges on the wall, side to side on the wall it helps etc..Loggon we will have to get you in the water. After we do the coffee.lol

I missed the warm up, I was late. I'd like to do these classes but later I guess.

So Kim, did you build up slowly to more activity in the class?

Hollie

Yes, It really is worth it. You can be creative. Instead of using the bars under water to do the bike peddling. (you hold on arms on each side and peddle) Try taking a noodle (I know you know about those now ) haha just kidding, anyway get a noodle put it in between your legs, go to the deap end, and peddle, but you are trying to stay steady so you are using your arms as well. My arms hurt for awhile after that. There is alot more to do as well. You were in shape before you will have no problem doing it again... Good luck, you can do it....

Hollie! Now you need aquatherapy to rehab your knees! Are you wearing one of those frilly bathing caps with the strap? (Only kidding!).....Now feel better!!!! :)

Haha to funny, I dont wear the hat, but I wear the nerdy rubber shoes. Well the bottom of the pool hurts my toes !!!!lol

I would wear a bathing cap....I told them "if I have to do my hair over after this class, I'm quitting".

I got lots of tips on how not to get your hair wet after that. Just don't go down very deep.

The floor is so slippery in the locker room afterward, I think that's why you need the rubber shoes...
