today has been my worst day. lots of swelling from my knee up. this is causing my knee to hurt due to the fluid and tight skin. is this normal?

Hi Mark you are only 5 days out believe me at about 2 weeks it will feel better. This is like the bumpy period. I am 10 weeks , so really it will get better. Its prob. swollen , tight, lil painful. Best thing to do is elevate, ice. and medicine at this point...It is normal at your stage. You should be relaxing, take advantage of it for while. Hope you feel better soon.............

Mark,

Starting a few days after surgery through day 13, every time I sat up, my whole leg would swell all the way down to my toes. It was rather annoying. Then suddenly, since day 14, it has stopped. My hip is still swollen, but the swelling in my leg is greatly reduced.

If you're like me you'll need to spend lots of time with your feet up. I don't know if you saw Andy's suggestion to put some folded quilts or blankets between the mattresses at the foot of your bed, but I found it very helpful for elevating my feet.

Hang in there. Every day gets a bit better.

Diane

Mark, it happens a lot. Be sure to ice, elevate and take your pain medications on a schedule (not just when it hurts).

Mark it was the norm for me. I gained over 20 pounds from fluid collection,. It happened in both legs from my thigh to my toes. I told the nurse, I left on the afternoon of day 5 that my leg was bigger than my tummy when I gave birth.
My home physical therapist was a little concerned so she had me spend the most of a weekend in bed with legs elevated. Actually I was just laying in bed she said the recliner (named Constance by dear Judles) was not good enough. After that weekend a lot of the fluid was gone.

Yes totally normal, keep resting , icing sleeping, resting!!!! take pain meds and stool softeners.

Well, I was going to say something ~ ~ ~ ~ but it's all been said!

Mark: Day 5 -7 were my worst days. All the swelling kicked in, all the discoloration kicked in, and, just to exacerbate matters a bit, I overdid it on day 4 as well. I looked like a giant discolored pear. But if you take care of yourself, over the next 1-2 weeks, it'll get better rather quickly.
