Good evening , I am new to this site, i am a 62 yr old male 2 1/2 years post tkr on right knee
MRI revealed a 5cm fraying/tear of spacer.

Also a 4.5cm x 5.5 cm scarring in the deep margins of hoffas fat pad

ortho out of town for 7 days so am wondering if i will need to have spacer replaced? if so what does it involve

Have had 17 orthopedic procedures in last 14 years so am familiar with rehab /recovery

curious if anyone has had experience with the two issues i have been experiencing

Thanks in advance

Dan

Hi and Welcome!

While I’ve not heard of a spacer tearing, we have had members who had to have their spacer replaced, and while it’s still an invasive surgery, no bones are cut and drilled, so the recovery is a little “easier” than the original TKR surgery.

Please tell us your TKR surgery date and we’ll make a signature for you.

Wow, that’s a lot! What other types of procedures have you had? Has the same surgeon done all your surgeries?

Thanks for the info on the spacer issue. Actually the term was Fraying not tearing, however my thought was the terms were interchangeable?

My TKR on Right knee was Dec 16 2020

The 17 procedures were primarily done by same surgeon
They include:

Meniscus repair left knee
Microfracture left knee
Partial left knee replacement
quad tendon repair left leg x2
Meniscus repair right knee
Allograft in right knee
TKR right knee
IT band release right knee
SLAP tendon, bicep tendinosis ,subscapularis repair right shoulder
TSR right shoulder
Subscapularis repair x 5 right shoulder
Revision of TSR dues to chronic infection right shoulder

Thank you for all that information, you sure have been through a lot. Are those all listed in chronological order? Which partial did you get? (I have a patellofemoral)

Please forgive all my questions, I’m just trying to understand your history, with several procedures done on the same areas.

I agree that fraying and tearing would seem interchangeable. I haven’t heard of a spacer fraying, either, but the soft tissue around it could. Usually when a spacer, which is made of plastic, is replaced, it’s for a different size, due to an instability issue. Sometimes it actually does break, requiring a new one.

What have your activities been over the years? Are these procedures from injuries, or arthritis?

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the update on the surgeries you’ve experienced.
I’m sorry you’ve had to endure and recover from so many procedures.
We‘ve abbreviated the list somewhat so please let us know if we’re missing anything or it feels out of order and we’ll edit accordingly. Best Wishes going forward!
