1st of 2tkr to be done Jan 2009 Lots of ????

Hi...I've read so many experiences of kr surgery esp. post op. Both of my knees are bad and so I know I need them done.I didn't realize how much would be involved after with pt etc. and it seems it can be quite a problem with what I've read.I'm in my 60's and have m.s. though it is stable.I am wondering what my experience will be. I'm taking notes from what I've read and am going to do a journal like some suggested so I can see improvement (hopefully) daily or weekly. I guess I'm just saying that all of a sudden I'm feeling very tense about it all but trying to stay positive. You all have helped me to at least consider the challenges I face and to know there are those who've been there and have "made it!" I'm a new member so doing more reading than posting! Lindy

Lindy-- keep reading and posting! Some of us "winter knees" from last year are hanging around to "give back" and help as we were helped. NO ONE really knows and understands all of this until you have been there. There is no better resource than this forum.

The journal is a GREAT idea. I kept one and it helped me keep my perspective and track my progress. I recorded pain levels, medications taken with times(it is so easy to forget when you are "foggy"), exercises I did, questions I had, etc. Great tool!

You'll be ok. It's not easy but worth it.

Lindy,

TKA has become so common that many seem to think it is "no big deal." It is a big deal, but it's also a great deal. The first couple weeks are pretty rough, but certainly doable. After that it really does get better, but the progress is slower than most people wish. Most people see you walking around and figure you're fine way before you really are fine. BUT--you will be facing the challenges and getting better. It just isn't a straight path for most people, but it is a positive one. Your MS complicates things, but on a positive note, when you recover from the TKA, your MS unsteadiness will no longer be exacerbated by bad knees. I know that I already consider my replaced knee to be my "good knee". I will wait to have the other one done when my quads are really strong again.

The reason you more of the "real deal" complaints in here is because those who have gone before can reassure those who are beginning their journeys. People, with the exception of Jo of course, who haven't been there don't really get it--even the orthopedic surgeons themselves.

Stick with this forum, the great folks on here will be both encouragement and comfort--and good for many laughs as well.

Can't add much to all that! Trained them all well, haven't I!
