All so quick - 6 days between hip arthroscopic specialist referral to joint replacement specialist to urgent left THR; had surgery 5 days ago and recovery lot more painful than anticipated - very thankful for finding your Forum today; will post my story soon

In Mid Feb 20 I underwent hip arthroscopy to repair labral tear and FAI in left hip. The Surgeon found the labrum was too damaged and required a reconstruction using a graft. Post recovery went really well for the first 4-5 weeks and the severe pain I was experiencing prior to surgery was gone, it was amazing as I could look forward to recovering my previous active life style and love of golf.

The hip started grumbling again about 5 weeks and rapidly regressed with a MRI at approx 11 week mark showing the graft had not taken properly and tearing, the joint cartilage now shot with changes in bio metrics , bone marrow edema in both femoral head and acetabular etc etc etc (please note my hip arthroscopic outcome and experience is rare and is not the norm - I just happened to be that very unlucky person.)

Pain excruciating back on crutches and referred to joint replacement specialist - On 20 May 20 met with joint replacement specialist who took more X rays which show further regression. Now with no joint space, bone on bone with femoral head pushing up into back of hip - urgent hip replacement required - left THR occurred on 26 May 20

Whirlwind- posterior surgery with ceramic uncemented implant occurred 26 May andI went home on same day; the first few days were pretty rough if I am honest. Today is Day 5 - yet to see any external bruising but can certainly feel lots of internal bruising. I am moving pretty well with daily increases in weight bearing however their is severe pain still in my buttocks and thigh and knee especially at end of day and through night - yes there have been a few tears, I am trying to remain focused on light at end of the tunnel; first week is much tougher than I thought it would be but know it is necessary so I was glad to see and hear what others were experiencing when I found your forum.

Welcome to BoneSmart and recovery. Thanks for joining us and congrats on your new hip. I’ll leave the Recovery Guidelines for you. Please read them as I believe you’ll find the info beneficial as you begin healing. Stop back often so we can support and encourage you as you begin to heal.
Wishing you comfort and a peaceful day!

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this
6. Access to these pages on the website

Pain management and the pain chart
Healing: how long does it take?
Chart representation of THR recovery

Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule
Energy drain for THRs
Pain and swelling control: elevation is the key
Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it
Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask the at each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Wow, you posted your painful account as I was composing the Recovery Guidelines message above. I’m so very sorry for all you endured. Sending a warm hug and wishes for brighter days. A flower for you.

Thank you Layla,

While brain wants to be Wonder Woman body definitely telling me it is not, tried doing too much and after so much pain overnight have iced and slept most of the day.

Looking forward to making it to the end of week 1, reduction in discomfort and stitches being removed; stay strong all

:wave:Welcome @Hippie Kiwi
I hope your pain is better managed and you are hanging in there.
These first weeks after can be jarring...and with several procedures done in succession, your body can use all the rest and ice possible.:ice::ice::ice:
Healing vibes coming your way.

All post op pain I am afraid. And since you had 2 major surgeries in a short space of time you may need to be patient a bit longer than most new hippies.

The good news is when all is healed you will indeed get back to the activities you love. For now take your medication around the clock, as prescribed to stay ahead of the pain. Ice is your friend!

Well...you’ve now passed the one week mark. Happy One Week Anniversary!
Hopefully the last couple days have been easier on you. Wishing you lots of comfort and sending a reminder that we’re here if you need us.
A peaceful rest of the week to you. :)
