all i want is a good nights sleep:zzz:
if any one has any tips or advice i ould love to hear from you:thmb:
thanks

Two hour's sleep is doing pretty well for week two. Most people only manage an hour or so at a time. Don't get too fretful. Things will improve as time goes by. In six month's time this will all be a distant dream ....

sorry - couldn't resist!

Yep Im sorry to say get sleep whenever you can. That 2 hr thing might last awhile. Ugh. But all the sudden on morning you will wake up and realize you went all night..good luck I hope it happens soon for you...)........

Wayne,

The best advice on sleep I read on this forum before my surgery was to plan on not sleeping well. So, I didn't get upset when I couldn't sleep. When I woke up at night, I would turn on a book light and read. I read lots of books early on. I also took lots of naps.

Hang in there; it does get better.

Ill take a swipe at it.Im almost 4 weeks and still not sleeping well.I wont take pills to sleep so heres how i do it.I take the 2 or so hours i get at night then nap alot during the day!!! Dont fight it your body requires sleep and will make sure you can nap!!

When I was at 2-weeks, I remember taking a Percocet and within 10 minutes I was out for the count. The percs took my mind off the back-sleeping for a while.
Would it help to get a pillow-top mattress topper for extra comfort? They have really nice ones at overstock.com

I'd be sleeping whenever I could, day and night.....a bit like having a newborn. The mother needs to sleep when the baby sleeps, and in this instance I would be sleeping in bed, on the lounge, recliner anywhere where you can be temporarily unconscious....and I woulde do nothing to overstimulate at night. No caffeine, (tea or coffee) ,aromatherapy, meditation, meds, lights down, no stimulating conversations/arguements, anything that is relaxing, a little ventilation not over hot or cold.....
I got a sheepskin woollen underblanket.....that really helps......is it hot where you live? here its cool, so the underblanket helped with not needing heavy blankets, just a light weight doona .....that really helped.

Watch the History Channel! That should do it! (:)0)

lol Judles, I wish I would have heard that one during my surgery, probably works !!!!!!! Let us know if you try it.....lol.) good luck

I am 4 weeks past my last surgery and I still don't sleep much. When I first came home, I would sleep just an hour at a time, then get up to use the potty, back to bed, read a while, then repeat.
After getting back into my own bed last week I slept better and wasn't waking up to go potty as often. But I am back to waking up lots and I think part of the problem is due to the fact that I don't get very tired as I am not very active.
I do lots of reading, watch tv or get on this site. However, I now have another occupation; hubby keeps bringing butter beans from the garden, so I spend the night shelling them:thmb:.
I usually get sleepy in the afternoon and take a nap then.
The sleeping on the back was aggravating, so to alleviate, I would ramble around a bit or sit in a comfortable chair before getting back in bed. I also had a foam topper on the mattress to make it more comfy.

Gosh the support info on this site is fantastic. My surgery isn't until Sept. 16th but I'm off to Sears tomorrow for a foam topper for my mattress. Many thanks everybody.

You're welcome, Donna. Nice to know we are helping!

hi guys well i have had the bestnights sleep last night and i
now feel great :wahey:i hope i can have a few more nights like this.
however the sleeping on my back is still a killer i so just want to roll over on to my side and curl up iam sure there will be a few more unhappy nights to come but you know what things are starting to pick up and still can not beleave how things get so much better in just a few days and donna the mattress topper is well worth getting you need all the comfort you can get if you are not used to sleeping on your back also a nice big milky hot chocolate before down time as well and you sould be out for the count good luck for sept hope all goes well for you :thmb:

Wayne,
Glad to hear you got some sleep at last. How did you do it?

Donna, I got a mattress topper for my recovery after back surgery. It would have been great for the hip recovery. Good plan on your part!!

I take something for sleep so it was not a big problem for me. I also took at least one nap every day. I guess I was lucky in that regard. I love my new hip, must tell everyone, it is the best.

Hey,

im still in the before my op stage, i found the eggshell top i think it is, a huge help gettin to sleep when i had other ops and stuff where i had to sleep on my back. that and elevating my legs... But yeah sorry i cant help more... but yay for me i have sleepless nights to look forward too.. Tee Hee.. i guess im gonna be posting a heck of alot around then :)

I invested in a nice soft Lazy-Boy recliner and for the first 4 weeks or so I slept as much in that thing as I did in my bed. It kept me on my back, but was much more comfortable as I could adjust my legs up or down and how far I reclined. But the best part was just being able to adjust it so I wasn't in the same position all of the time.

Still, two hours sleep at a shot the first couple of weeks was about normal for me. I'd have to get up to walk and/or take a pill. I do miss those mid-day naps though. Strange, for some reason my employer refuses to pay me for napping now...

Those naps whould be included. As part of your job description! Don't they make you refreshed and more proficient??? ((;0)
