I'm so excited, I got 120 degrees today! I'm really stiff and swollen right now, and I think I need to go take a little nap, but I just wanted to share my excitement with you!!!

Thanks,
Hess

That is awesome! How much longer will you work with a PT since you're at 120? I know you have to keep working on your own, but how long do they usually want to keep you in outside PT? The price of gas these days has me trying to capitalize on any trip to town and sometimes PT is the only thing I have to go in for.

I have a ways to go in the ROM area, but whenever I push myself and get to another "goal", it seems I have a little setback in energy. Yesterday, I mowed part of the lawn and today I'm exhausted! A good exhausted, but still have to get all my PT in to get going on my ROM. So after a busy morning, I'm going to take a nap too...

Congratulations again!
Laurie

Laurie,

I'll have to continue with in-home therapy until I go back to the doctor for my 1 month post-op visit. At that time, I'll probably go to outpatient.

I have a recumbent bike, so I know that has helped with my ROM. I still have a lot of work to do in the other areas, and needless to say, this means more pain too! I'll get there!

Thanks for your support,
Hess

Hess, you are doing great! You may not have to go to out-patient PT since you are doing so well. I don't invision being in PT after 4 weeks, maybe 6 at the most.

I am at 115 and 0 today so happy with that. My other knee replacement is 120 and-5 after the manipulation I had so I cant believe that I'm just about there with so much less effort. I'll take it! Karen

Karen,

I'm VERY happy with the 120, but I'm still at -5 extension. I know this will come, but I have been focusing os on the ROM that I have put blinders on to everything else. Now it's time to focus on the other areas.

Tomorrow night is my first big outting, and I'm nervous!!

Thanks,
Hess

Awesome! Keep up the good work!

This is my first post and i am so happy. I had my left knee done 6 weeks ago and saw my surgeon yesterday. He was very pleased with my progress as i have had no physio what ever except for the exercises i was shown in hospital. when i told him i will have my first physio apointment 1st July he laughed and told me they will send you home and do not come back. He told me i have a 125 bend unforsed which he tought was remarkable. I also told hold him that i can ride my bike each day for an hour with no probs, climb stairs two at a time and walk the dog each day. I now only take paikillers at night if i feel i must. SO all in all i am delighted at my progress. I always had a positive mind set but i never expected such an improvment. Its a MIACLE.
To all those out there who might be thinking of the pro's and con's take heart and go for it.

Jeepers! That's some recovery! Did you have a total knee or a partial?

Drew, I think your doctor is right. You don't need physical therapy. You are already doing well on your own! I'm 2 1/2 weeks now but plan to be about where you are when I hit the six week mark. Karen

I'm getting really jealous now. I am 5.5 months out and still only get 93 ROM forced. Well done to all of you. I hope to be there in a couple of weeks time after my manipulation!!

Hi there everyone im new here and i was woundering what a manipulation my pt thinks were losing ground because of my bend was 98 then 96 my sugery was april 28 2008 so its been 2 mths. i also have my muscal from my hip to my knee is still asleep i have no fire

Karen, what a wonderful accomplishment! I'm so happy for you. You have come so far and now have happy days ahead. Congratulations.

Hess, I agree with Karen. I went straight from home therapy to no therapy because, like you, I used my recumbent bike and was able to get good ROM fairly quickly. Good luck and great job!

I only went to PT three times. Don't get me wrong, I did all the exercises at home plus I rode the bike. I didn't decide not to go to PT when I went for my six week check up after surgery with the OS he was so happy with my progress, ROM and general flexabiility plus my ability to walk unaided that he told me to do whatever I was doing at home and forget PT I didn't need it. I have continued to do everything I was doing before. My surgery will have been 8 weeks this coming Tuesday and I have to tell you that as long as I ice, elevate and use my pain meds before the pain gets bad I am doing great. I can see it is a long battle and that we all have to face pretty much the same thing but it is a welcome relief to my pocket book to not have to drive in to town for PT. Was even relieved that the OS released me. We live in the boonies, 35 miles one way to almost anything except one small shopping center and gas is over $4 a gallon here. Last week we spent $100 on gas for two vehicles and didn't fill either one up so I can certainly relate to the person who said they tried to eliminate anything in town they could. Add the additional cost for everything else because of the gas prices it gets to be a pretty big strain on the budget especially with the added expense of my 50 year old son who had to move in with us two years ago. He physically is unable to work but doesn't draw anything from any agencies so it gets pretty difficult some days. What can you do, only your best. Thanks for listening. Rowdy

I definitely needed the PT with my first knee last Oct. I had such a hard time progressing but this time, I probably could do without it for the knee. I've got back problems and they are DEFINITELY helping me with that this go round so we are incorporating both body parts into one appt. I only have to travel 3 miles and my therapists have become great friends. It also gets me out of the house three times a week so it's working for me. I'll start the gym in about a week and as long as my back continues to improve, I'll stop PT. I've been fortunate that I have two insurance companies and don't have to pay anything for it so I like to go as long as I see some benefit out of it.

Rowdy, you have done so good with your bilats and I've always found you to be such an inspiration. You keep at it! And Jamie, you too. Neither of you post as much lately and I miss you both! I'm headed out for the mall at day 20. Won't be walking the whole thing but will at least get some exercise in. My daughters are always more then willing to go there! Ha! Karen

Janet - did you mean you were "wondering what a manipulation is"?

If so, it is a means to increase the movement in the joint under anaesthetic. Often called an MUA. Sometimes adhesions and scar tissue build up where they shouldn't be and are responsible for the loss of mobility. The only way to get a break through is for the surgeon to do it forcibly under GA. There are many threads in here by people who have had manipulations. I suggest you search them out and have a read.
