11 Months constant pain

You poor thing with an infection that, by the sound of it, should have been investigated and picked up some time ago. Let's hope that it can be cleared up without too much trouble.

I don't know what the procedure is with an infection - is it antibiotics? Sending healing thoughts your way........

Hi Mike. So sorry to hear about your infected knee. I've been down that route (now coming out the other end) so if I can help at all, do let me know. There's no getting away from the fact that it's a long and frustrating journey but the BoneSmart family will be right behind you all the way. Linda x

Well I saw 2 specilist today an infectious disease and a new OS both of them recommended that we take the two stage approach to get ride of the infection. Words cannot express how I feel about this. Life sometimes just is not fair. I guess sometimes you have to look around at the burdens that others have to bear and then it doesn't seem so bad. I'll get through this with my wife by my side and all of your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you all, Mike

Mike,
This is a really hard pill to swallow. Closed space infections especially around bone is a tough one to treat. Did the doc say what bacteria they isolated from your knee and what they planned to treat you with?? (I am a microbiologist..so I am naturally curious about the 'bugs').

I am so sorry you having to deal with this. It is okay to be angry and upset..you deserve it..after putting up with 11 months of pain. You are one my prayer list.

Mike, I'm sending you (((HUGS)))).....

I am thankful you have your family to support you and, of course, you DO have all of us. We'll be here for you. I think once things get started you will feel a little better. It's somewhat comforting to be doing SOMETHING! But you're right....it's not fair. I know you will stay determined and assertive with your doctors. You'll get through it.

What is the "two-stage approach" that was recommended? And when will it start???

Stage 1 will be the removal of the implant and to install the spacer. About 6-8 weeks later after they have confirmed that there is no longer any infection the will then perform stage 2 which is to install the new implant.

We are scheduled for the first operation on Dec 21st.

Thanks, Mike. You'll be in my prayers until this is completely resolved. I'm glad you're in good hands.

Aw No Mike, Just Before Christmas I'm So sorry man, Thats a heavy blow.
Wishing You The Best Please take care and stay Positive!

Awe jeez, that is too bad Mike. Why are they waiting so long to take it out? It seems to me that an infected joint would be given higher priority. I certainly wouldn't want to wait another month. Did they at least start you on IV antibiotics now? (sorry, I am a very impatient nurse)

Mike,
I plain do not know what to say. Your OS is your old OS thats good. I have been down that road when you know something is wrong with your knee and they act like No everything is going just the way it should!!! Only to find out 7 months later you were and are right!!! There was something wrong with the knee. I am so happy that your wonderful wife is there by your side to see you through this new bump in the road of life. I will pray that this goes smoothly and you are fine as frog hair in no time at all. And this summer you and your wife are back out there riding your Hog.

Oh Calling, I just love your country girl terminology!!!! Fine as frog hair, ROFL!!!!! I never knew that frogs had hair.

Mike, I just want to add another voice to say we are so sorry for the problems you are having. I have to say that it does seem an infected joint would have priority over just about anything, we ALL wish you didn't have to wait so long, or even go through this at all.
I am glad that you, as I, have a wonderful wife to help you through this troubling time.
Another set of hopes and prayers is coming your way with wishes of a complete recovery.

Thank you everyone. As far as the wait, I am traveling to Hungrary next week and after talking to both of my Doc's yesterday they did not seem to thing that now that the decision to remove the implant has been made waiting a few weeks won't effect the outcome.

When I get back from Budapest they will insert the PIC line and start the IV's.

This whole thing is truly a kick in the nards!!

:cnsl: Mike. And they're right - won't make a whole lot of difference in the long run. You just enjoy your trip.

Mike,
Have a wonderful time in Hungrary. Take lots of pictures and while you are recovering you can post some and tell us all about what it was like of there.
This way I can see it all without having to even get on a airplane!! Or be scaned or wand!!!!!
