Hi everyone I had knee replacement about 10 weeks ago and went back to work at 4 weeks they stopped pt at 4 weeks to because I could bend 120 and had almost 0 on being straight.I have been trying to work out on my own. I do a lot of walking. The only place I have any pain is above my knee and behind it. I don't know if this is normal or not. I say pain but it is mild compared to what it was before the replacement. Do any of you know how long the swelling will go on. Thanks for any help. Shirleyann

Re: Almost 10 Weeks! Big Difference!

Hi Shirleyann
The swelling can go on up to a year. I know also that even several years out, it can swell if you do too much but that would have to be a lot. I have several friends with TKR and they or 3 and 4 years out and have swelling but it is on a few times a year.

I think my swelling went away for most of the time around 2 1/2 months.

It would on occasion swell and still does but not every day. It is not stiff as much as it was.

The back of the knee stop hurting so much in the 4th month but I have a Bakers cyst.

Hi Shirleyann, and welcome to BoneSmart. I moved your post into the knee recovery forum as you had posted in the MIS forum. You didn't say if you'd had MIS but if you have I'll move it back again. We also like to give new members a thread of their own so they get their own replies.

I'm amazed at your recovery! The swelling can go on for several weeks. Although you feel your present pain is not as bad as it was pre-op, you still have some and it needs to be treated.
A thing to remember is that swelling can be caused by pain and pain causes swelling! So if you want the swelling to reduce, reduce the pain, even though it's low grade.

I'm six months out and I still swell. Not on a daily basis, but on those days when I do too much or stand on my feet too long. (like the last few days). My ankle on the surgical leg, however, swells nearly daily.

I can usually tell if my knee/leg swollen before I look because I ache. I just elevate, sometimes ice, and the swelling goes down. The ankle swelling doesn't cause me any discomfort and I usually notice it at the end of the day.

Welcome Shirley im 4 mths out and swell sometimes at 10 weeks im sure you still try to take breaks and get off those feet............) Good Luck!!!!!!!! back to work at 4 weeks wow. Amazing !!!!!!!

I just had an appt with my OS on Monday and asked him about the swelling. My cardiologist said I had a little swelling in my ankles but it was normal. My OS told me the swelling usually lasts about 6 months. He explained that when they put the tourniquet on your leg for surgery it crushes some of the muscle .Along with that the veins are crushed which causes them to not have the same abilty to contract and squeeze the fluids as before the surgery. He told me it takes about 6 months for them to return to normal, which accounts for some of the swelling in addition to what you may get by overwork, pain, etc.

Welcome to BoneSmart Shirley. I can't be of much help, I'm 6 weeks out. I just wanted to welcome you. Good luck and hopefully your pain and swelling will be gone soon.

Shirleyann,
You are still in early recovery not even at 3 months yet. And with you working
you are going to have some swelling and a little pain. The muscles like to complain
alittle so you know they are there! LOL
But you are really doing GREAT!!
