Its been some time since I posted about my then 15 year old son and both his hip replacements. I thought I would take the opportunity to post here about his excellent recovery as a way to encourage others who like us agonized over the decision to have their kid go through all this. I'm not...
@AlexoRI....my son now 16 had both hips replaced last summer. I can't recommend the Mayo Clinic enough. I know it's not close but the care he got there was amazing. I will look for your separate thread and will be happy to share his story if it helps at all.

vbc7987, tbatt9 here. I am so sorry to hear about the ordeal your daughter is going through. My 15 year old (now 16) son has had both hips replaced. First in July, second in August. His hips were near collapse due to AVN within both femoral heads. He has had some rough patches in his...
Thanks for all the replies. Special thanks also to Josephine for all your expert guidance and encouragement. You helped me tremendously as I was freaking out over every little thing my son was going through.
I will be likely posting less often now that thank God he seems to have come thru the...
Update on Matthew. Its been about 7 weeks since the second hip and he has been off the walker and using a quad cane for couple weeks. He seems like he will be off the cane in another week or so. He has been able to use stairs although he hasn't had to much.
He only takes a couple Tylenol...
Krista, I laughed out loud when I saw your post as we tried to get him to use that exact walker. His grandmother was visiting us from Maine and she uses one. She wanted to leave it for him to use and replace hers when she got home but being the stubborn prideful teen he is he absolutely...
Thank you for your comments. I think part of our problem is our expectations were not realistic about the recovery. When we first were considering doing this I assumed he would need a prolonged recovery time. I was thinking he might have to wait until high school was over and try and do this...
Update as to Matthew. He is now 4 weeks post second hip, 10 weeks post first hip. First the good news. His blistering rash as a result of an allergic reaction to the surgical glue resolved, although its left him with an ugly scar we hope fades soon. His nerve pain in his foot is still present...
Maya'sdad, thanks so much. I remember reading your story as we were trying to figure out what to do. Glad to hear your daughter is doing well.
Matthew is progressing but it seems a little slower than for the first hip, which itself was done less than only 8 weeks ago. I guess that's to be...
Thanks. Of course you are right. Spoke to the dr a couple times since my post and he is sure it's an allergic reaction to the dermabond glue. I asked why it didn't happen with first hip and he explained that reactions act this way in that often the first exposure doesn't do much but subsequent...
Just as I start to think everything is ok another issue comes up. I emailed photos of Matthew's surgical wounds and the dressings off to his surgeon this morning as his incision had a lot more drainage than the last time and just looked nastier to my eye. He wrote back,
"It looks indurated...
So we are at day 5 post op for second hip and almost 7 weeks post op for first hip.
The good news so far is that we were better prepared for the home transition and didn't have the immediate crisis we did upon getting home last time. He is eating well and is more alert. But on the other hand he...
Oops. Sorry about that X-ray. I haven't slept much in last few days and I didn't even notice as I was looking at the implants.
We are back home now and so far so good. Much better transition to home this time. We are following the mantras this time to the letter. Thanks again to this site and...
Thank you all for your kind replies. This site has been huge help in getting through all this.
Yesterday late afternoon they pulled the nerve block catheter. The good news with that is the numbing goes away so should be able to move better but downside is his pain went up a lot. They have him...
So we made it thru the second surgery replacing his left hip yesterday afternoon and think we will be discharged home tomorrow depending on how he does. This time around he seems a little better at this point in that he's eating and seems a little more alert. He hasn't been able to move much out...
Its been a while since I posted here. This will be a sort of post op update/ pre op post. Not sure if the rules allow it this way or if I am suppose to start a new thread so here it goes.
So Matthew is now 5 weeks and two days post op for the right hip. The good news is he has progressed...
Things are progressing but slowly. Today is just the two week point post op. He still gets tired easily which in part is I think due to not being able to do much except sit around the house. He did make it out for lunch yesterday and that went well. He still is using walker but I am hopeful the...
Thanks for the concern and good suggestions. We will just have to deal with the school situation after we see how long it takes him to recover enough this time that we would feel comfortable sending him back.
For now, post op day 12, he has been making good progress. Getting in and out of bed...
