Ankle My total ankle replacement story

Larry, sorry I can't help you with exercises since I was on crutches, in a cast with no weight bearing for 6 weeks. If you look at my page you can see what I go through now. The Bosu ball really seems to help get the blood flow to the ankle and it feels great! I am now to a point where I can...

Ankle My total ankle replacement story

@Larryr, glad to see you were put in a cast! Not sure the boot would have been a good idea. I know, with me, I was traveling a bit and sometimes on crutches, hitting a wet spot, going up or down stairs, balance can be a challenge. I was glad I had the cast to protect my ankle. It took a few...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

@Larryr I actually had used him prior to this event. He really didn't know much about TAR PT and the instructions were very loose. i.e. remove boot, increase weight bearing and mobility as tolerated. There was also a mention to work on my gait. I too was far from my Dr. so had to go locally...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

@marieltha Actually I don't sit when using the Bosu ball or the wobble board. But I do have something to hold on to if/when I lose my balance on the Bosu ball and can't save it without some help. On the wobble board, I don't need anything really.

I just heard back on the Cephalexin. It's only for the first 6 months.

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

@Jamie...Dr. said, whatever I can handle. :-) And honestly, it's not painful. There was one tender spot going up the outside of my calf where they had to back off some pressure but that just pointed to where we needed more work. That is subsiding rapidly now too.

And this is what it looks like after playing 18 holes, walking and carrying my bag on a course that has some tough hills to climb. Not bad considering!

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

Thought I'd share an hour of therapy starting with the TENS unit and heat. Then the low intensity laser. Don't worry usually it's covered with a towel but I wanted to get a pic. After that we went to massage and the Graston tools using both the broad side and the narrow end to get into the...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

Thought I'd add a few pics on how I use the wobble board. Probably shouldn't do it with socks on. Actually better with shoes or barefoot, but it's cold in New England this morning. So basically you stand across the board and tilt forward and back. Stand at an angle and rock side to side and...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

Sorry my bad on the antibiotic. I just went back through my meds online and they prescribed Sulfamethoxazole-TMP DS Tablets. 2 tablets a day for 9 days. They also prescribed Cephalexin 500 MG capsule. I am to take 2 capsules 1 hour before and 1 hour after dental work. Not sure if that's...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

Ok, so it's been a while since I posted. I have quite a bit to share. After the cast was removed I used the boot for maybe a week and a half. I went between the boot and just shoes, with a cane. But I was soon past needing either. At my first physical therapy session the PT said he had to...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

I didn't wear anything when sleeping and the boot is easy to get in and out of. I probably wore it for a week off and on. Kept going between using a cane and using the boot.

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

Cast off, stitches gone, as well as, the steri-strips. Now the real work begins. Have been walking on it some with the walking boot and crutches. Think I will get a cane. No need for carrying around a single crutch. But it hurts more now than before but it's not the joint itself just...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

So I took off my cast today. I am visiting the Dr. on Monday and have to fly there. So I asked them if it was ok to take it off, use the walking boot I have, AND my crutches until I get there. I have to fly to Raleigh so thought it would be easier without the cast. They said it was ok but...

    Ankle Total Ankle Replacement Journey

@marieltha oxycodone. Now I have to get rid of it somehow!! Rather that than having to take them because of pain!! Administrative note: Oxycodone is an opioid pain medication, not an antibiotic.
