TKR Almost 5 years post RTK, still having issues

Thank you Pumpkin for helping me to merge the threads. I couldn’t figure out how to do it. The app is different since I last used it and I couldn’t find my original. Maybe it would be easier on my computer than on my iPad.

TKR Almost 5 years post RTK, still having issues

I had RTK in June of 2015. It is still swollen and feels like I have a tight ace bandage wrapped around it. I have more discomfort than I did preop. I have gained 20# despite being more active and tracking calories so I stay at 1500/day. I am soooo frustrated. Walking is my primary exercise...

    TKR Antibiotics before dental work?

It is the orthopedic surgeon that ordered the antibiotics for dental work, not the dentist. My dentist has had bilateral TKAs and doesn't take prophylactic meds.

    TKR Antibiotics before dental work?

i had a RTKA almost 3 years ago. I have taken antibiotics before routine dental cleanings ever since. The American Dental Association no longer recommends this, and I don't like taking unnecessary antibiotics. Are other orthopedic surgeons still prescribing this regime? Thanks!

TKR Almost 5 years post RTK, still having issues

@Josephine 1) Pain level is 2-3--it is more of a very tight feeling around the knee although the top of the knee scar is tender to touch (no warmth or redness or other signs of infection, and not a new thing either) 2) I take naproxen sodium (Aleve) 200 mg every morning and acetaminophen 1000...

TKR Almost 5 years post RTK, still having issues

I appreciate your thoughts @Jamie, @pumpkin and @newlybionic. I did some research and there are two doctors who do revisions--mine and one who practices at the other hospital in town. It is worth looking into the possibilities for the tightness. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, @pumpkin--I haven't been back to the surgeon since my 1 year check. I really want to avoid another surgery if at all possible. After the TKA, I swore I'd never go through the procedure again. My husband is a great person but a terrible nurse! He has no patience for the healing process...

TKR Almost 5 years post RTK, still having issues

My right TKR surgery was done in June 2015. I followed all the recovery advice - ice, elevation, gentle PT only - and while my activity really isn't limited, I still have some swelling on the outer aspect of the joint and a feeling around my knee of an ACE wrap that is applied too tightly. I...

    Knee Infection Finally Finishing Up

@PegGar16 Peggy--you and I had our TKRs on the same day in 2015. I hadn't been on the forum much until I got the email about the funding needs and that got me back again. I just finished reading your story and am so sorry you have had so many problems. I haven't had the recovery I was expecting...

    TKR Kate's Knee Knews

Hi @SDkate--I haven't been on BoneSmart for months and finally decided to see if there were any updates from the people I followed after I had my surgery. How ironic that your new job is now with your former employer! So sorry to hear about your fractured wrist, but happy it is healing well. I...

@SarahJane -- thanks for the kind words. It has been a crazy seven weeks! I have only spent one week at home since my dad died. I forgot my ice packs at home, so I haven't been icing. I have read that he swelling can persist for as long as a year so I am trying to be patient. I do take Aleve...

    TKR Kate's Knee Knews

@SDkate -- What encouraging news about your job interview. Fingers crossed that you get an offer! I've been out of the loop, too. My dad died suddenly while we were on our California trip, so that was cut short and I had to fly home while my husband drove 12 hour days to get back. We had the...

Second TKA in 9 months due to metal allergy

@Firefighter57 -- I found out about my allergy when my earlobes reacted to cheap earrings. I never had an issue if the posts or wires were gold, but if I bought a cheap pair the earlobes were angry. Now I only wear gold or other hypoallergenic jewelry.

Second TKA in 9 months due to metal allergy

@Firefighter57 -- So sorry you had to go through so much pain. My doctor never asked about metal allergies, either, but I was reading online about two weeks before my surgery date and saw a warning about nickel allergies and the cobalt/chromium implant. I can't wear earring posts that aren't...

I didn't walk on the beach--just watched my granddaughter play in the sand from the pavement--but I will remember my cane for next time.
