Hi Folks,
My second (right) hip is one year old tomorrow! I got it 8 years after my first (at 61). My recovery was good...not as amazing as the first. Most of what held me back were issues not specific to the hip operation.
I had it done by the same surgeon, Dr. Stephen Murphy at New...
Hi Zebra,
I recently passed on an outpatient appointment. I'm really glad that they worked so well for you.
My first one (and two revisions) were all spending one night and my main motivation for skipping outpatient was not having a spinal, and with the general anesthesia I really appreciated...
Jaycey,
I am honored that you think of me when you think of Jetlag. Our hip surgeries have led to multiple visits half way across the country and we've developed a real face to face friendship thru Bonesmart!!
Kevin was an inspiration then...and he's an inspiration now...
Thanks all for the words of encouragement. I had 2 revisions (just new parts) after my original so I'm pretty comfortable with the process.
Some of your comments got me thinking and I guess I tend to pick a goal, hopefully at least borderline achievable, and I work towards that. I kind of...
Hi friends,
I wanted to stop by and offer one datapoint regarding how long recovery takes. This is not about how long before one is walking or back to your normal daily activities. This is the measure of how long before you get as much post-operative functionality as you are going to get. I had...
Hi folks!
It's nice to hear and see how well everyone is doing. I literally just got in from a snow (and ice) run in the mountains. Less than ideal conditions (ice-wise) that I normally might skip but the forecast says the windchill is going to be dangerous the next couple days so I squeezed...
Hi folks,
A Bonesmart friend of mine suggested that I share a recent activity I did. Since I purchased my cabin back in 2007 I had imagined that a hike to a mountain peak across the valley would be a fun thing to try starting at my front door.
In the pictures I show the peak from my front...
Thanks for all the kind words and thoughtful sentiments my friends. I assure you that the drive to see Kevin was worth every mile.
We had always thought that we'd meet up when one of his flights brought him somewhere in New England. It had not happened yet but we were still looking for the...
Kevin,
When I met you on this forum I quickly knew that you had the attitude and strength that I aspire to.
You are a warm and generous person and that kind of positivity will keep you stronger and healthier as you do your treatments.
I'm proud to call you my friend.

Waterman,
Due to a variety of mishaps I only had one pool session and loved the feeling. It was pretty early on, I wore a flotation belt and "ran" around the pool upright using just my legs (and NOT touching the bottom). REALLY good feeling and would recommend that everyone give this a try...
Hi folks,
Updated piece of advice on this old thread.
I ran a 5K a few weeks ago...something I do occasionally. I stick to "Trail Races" to allow me to stay off roads. This race was a fund raiser for the animal shelter where volunteer and I learned that the first 3/4 mile was on pavement...
Waterman1,
I am totally unqualified to advise on much of this...but resurfacing especially.
here are things that I am comfortable weighing in on...
I had a posterior approach and was extremely pleased with the results. I think either approach is fine ... depending on the surgeon.
I think...
I have no squeaking...but I know that some do. Here is an article with some stats from my surgeon.
Not sure if anyone listening in has dealt with this and has better info...
Waterman1,
My implant IS ceramic on ceramic. All that refers to is the rubbing surfaces between the ball and socket. My surgeon has done thousand+ modular hips and I was the 4th patient of his requiring a swap out.
I would also contend that in wear and tear and excess forces, I push my...
Waterman1,
A few things...Ultimately mine was not an "allergic" reaction. I am not allergic to either of the metals, or the corrosion by-product. Mine and others are categorized as an "adverse local tissue reaction".
The issue is that these modular hips are designed with flexible titanium...
Waterman1,
At the time of selection my main reason for considering resurfacing was to allow me to continue running. When my surgeon said he supports his THR patients running it gave me the confidence to go with the full THR. I had heard (don't know the stats) that the shorter pin involved in...
waterman1,
I'm not sure what I said that sounded like resurfacing...but I had a full THR in Jan 2012.
Here is a (fascinating) animated video of the procedure for the hip i got.
As you'll see on the video, I have a modular hip. If i were to do it again I would skip the modularity and go...
Charlie,
Not pine needles at the moment but more like ankle deep mud. REALLY makes a workout that much workout-ier.
It's an honor to be envisioned into that lovely Monty Python bit!
As far as kicking goes, I wonder if my kicking issues were an omen of the lurking inflammation. I plan to get...
Mikeb,
I appreciate the concern, but my surgeon gave me the green lite for 3 miles of trails 3 times a week. I've seen him many times since and he is very comfortable with his assessment. I know he has patients who are doing a lot more...but I'll stick with the 5K's.... :happydance:
Z
Charlie,
No worries at all! Hopefully you were off enjoying your life with a happy hip. :biking:
As for me, I got thru the questions and testing and now enjoy a hip that seems even happier than pre-inflammation. I think (in hindsight) that I was always dealing with some inflammation from...
