I am scheduled for my LTHR for June 5th.

On Jan 31, I added ES Tylenol (2, 3xs a day) to my Lodine and Cymbalta.
Over the past week, I noticed the pain getting worse and lasting longer... 24/7, there is some kind of pain!! Sometimes it feels like I am broken from belly button to ankles...

Is this normal?

I did fall backwards over one of my 4yos (teach preschool) last week but during the fall, I was able to make sure I didn't land on my bad hip.

Thoughts? Experience?

Thank you!!!

I am 2 weeks post op LTHR. I have to say that I had bone on bone pain that became excrutiating. I had hip pain on and off for a decade or more. It would flare up, pain in the groin and knee. Usually, it may be bad for a few days to 1 week and then subside. Yes, it came back and yes, I should have done something. I didn't. I had been limping for years and it was getting progressively worse. However, right after the first of the year, I could not walk. The pain was awful. A co-worker loaned me her cane as I just couldn't walk. I went to an orthopedic urgent care and was x-rayed. I have back issues that causes me pain but the hip was bone on bone. I couldn't get an appointment for 2.5 weekswith the hip specialist. It was the longest period of time of my life. The pain was nearly relentless. Narcotics did not touch it, so didn't take them. I couldn't sleep as I couldn't get comfortable, even in a recliner. Once I had my appt with the OS, I had to wait 4 weeks until surgery. It was awful and I was in tears many times.

Happily, 2 weeks post op and 2 weeks pain free.

Bone on bone pain is wretched. I used XS Tylenol, occasional Advil and ice. I brought ice packs everywhere I went, put one on top and another underneath. Also used a crutch on the opposite side of bad hip, it helped keep the weight off and inflammation down.

@mandasmom Welcome to BoneSmart! Yes, that bone on bone pain can go from tolerable to horrid overnight. Unfortunately you may have jarred that joint during your fall. Are you using any walking aid (crutch or cane)? That would help as you can take some of the weight off that sore hip.

Icing may help but unfortunately there are really no pain meds that touch pre-op pain. Baby that hip until you can get it replaced. The good news is all this will be gone just post op!

I tell you this - whoever does manage to find a drug to manage bone-on-bone pain will be in line for a Nobel Prize for services to humanity!

I'm waiting for a THR as well. I see you take Cymbalta and I was curious to know how long you have taken it for and did it help you (until now). Thanks, Jenn

Cymbalta was prescribed for Fibromyalgia. Lodine for Arthritis. Not sure if my hip pain would be more without it... sorry

Josephine, Your comment is really surprising in regard to my own situation. I have no cartilage left in my right hip. I expect that means I am bone on bone. However I very rarely take pain medication. I don't get much pain, although I am certainly losing mobility. My theory is that I do a fair bit of walking and thus I think I must have enough muscle support to keep the bones off each other.
Do many people have surgery due to lack of mobility alone?

Hiker2, I was quite fit when I got the double thr diagnosis and I could ride and walk well. Both were evenly worn bone on bone and my GP said that my toned leg muscles were likely supporting the sick OA hip joints. ROM was decent but not great like it was before OA. After a few mos both joints deteriorated very quickly and became extremely painful. In glorious hindsight, I should have pushed and had both done asap. It's a deep aching pain which is a misery once it sets in.

Bad pain! Wishing you luck. They don't want you to take anything strong too close to surgery. You will notice that that pain is gone after surgery...the surgery pain will be different and will get better every day. I have now had both hips replaced and feel better than I have felt in ten years. Thinking of you and wishing happy days ahead!

@Medfordart Is that Medford, as in Burlington County? If so, I am in Burlington County as well.

I am 2.5 weeks post op LTHR, best decision I made. The pre op pain was excrutiating, post op it was gone. Recovery is so far, so good. Bone on bone is horrendous.

Hi Nivea...yes Medford, NJ. Live in Voorhees. We used to own a gift store and art gallery in Medford.

I had my hips replaced through Reconstructive Orthopedics (Dr. Jain) at the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute....how about you?
I am glad your recovery is going well. So wonderful to be free of that horrible pain!

@Medfordart....I am in Mt. Laurel and work in Gibbsboro. We do frequent a couple of restaurants in Medford and your name caught my eye. Don't go to Medford all that often, though. Although, my son is a Lenape graduate.

I had my hip done with Rothman Institute. I had been having hip issues for probably the last decade and probably should have done this sooner. At any rate, at the beginning of the year, all of a sudden I could not walk. The pain was excrutiating. I do have back issues...c spine has bulging discs, stenosis, arthritis and degenerative discs. I know my lumbar spine is not good either. I didn't know if the pain and walking was a hip or back issue. The fairly new Rothman Urgent Care in Marlton is wonderful. I went there over a weekend and was xrayed. Ugh, my hip was bone on bone. They saw areas of my lumbar spine but thought my hip was worse. It took 2.5 weeks to get my appointment to see the hip doctor and he said it needed to be replaced. The waiting was the worst. The pain was so bad no matter what I did I couldn't get comfortable.

I went to the Rothman Specialty Hospital in Bensalem. Wonderful. Only 24 beds and used for orthopedic patients needing overnight stays.

Yes, Rothman has a great reputation. 2.5 weeks out, you are still at the beginning. It gets better and better!

We owned Catch the Wind on Main Street .
