THR Question

Yes....Sounds to me like sciatic nerve is irritated.

Per the above article:
The piriformis is a short, very strong muscle that lies at the back of the hip joint, going from the top of the femur (thigh bone) across the hip to the pelvis. Immediately beneath it and between the muscle body and the bone, lies the sciatic nerve and all its branches

Also in the article... radiating pain down the sciatic pathways, commonly called sciatica, which travels down the outer side of the leg, often as far as the ankle and foot.

9 months in now and still getting altered sensation in foot . Any advice from anyone it’s driving me mad . Surgeon doesn’t seem bothered. Should I try and see a nerve specialist?

Hi @Cat25,
I’m sorry. What did your surgeon have to offer when it was discussed? I guess if you’re getting no satisfaction from him, you will need to seek help elsewhere. At least a diagnosis so you understand what you’re dealing with. Please keep us posted.

He said the nerve was stretched during surgery and that it might take many months to heal

@Cat25 Indeed nerves take a loooooooong time to heal. Time and patience needed.

Beginning to regret the whole thing

@Cat25 There is medication that addresses nerve pain. Can you ask your GP to prescribe gabapentin? It might just calm things enough to help you tolerate this discomfort.

I’ve read about that . It’s not pain so
Much as altered sensation. Heard some gabapentin horror stories which is putting me off

Please consider checking into alternatives then, just for the interim as the discomfort eases and disappears. :fingersx: Hopefully that happens soon so you’re not having the regret you expressed and can move forward pain free.

I had very good results with pregabalin when I had nerve pain in my thigh.
I took it for about 6 months, then was able to wean off, no problems.

Good luck - nerve pain is hard to deal with.

I had hip dysplasia and have had 3 Peri-Acetabular Osteotomies(also with bone grafts). I did lose sensation on both thighs on the outside of my thighs as a result. The PAOs were 10+ yrs ago now. It's not something that I was told would come back, but honestly it's really not a big deal. I have never noticed it to be an issue with anything.

As time goes, if it does not come back for you either, I really wouldn't stress about it. Your body adapts to changes really easily.

Thanks Polarice three PAOs is tough ! Hopefully I’ll get used to it too but why my foot is the only affected place I do not know
