THR Hopefully Hippy Recovery

So glad to hear you are doing so well.
Happy belated 9 month hipaversary, my hippy pal.

Thanks very much Mojo!

Unfortunately my bad tooth is playing up again - the one that had the 3x root canal treatment and got infected again so back on antibiotics. I think I may have to wish it a fond goodbye and get rid of it. But it will be costly. The pain yesterday when the dentist injected straight into the tooth was awful…

Hipwise all going well though but terrified of an infection. Can't believe the difference after 9 months so hoping it will be at 100% thereabouts after a full year. The swimming is helping too and I notice movement and things freeing up as a result. I really appreciate all the support on here..

@SurreyGirl
Sorry to hear about the tooth, almost as bad as the hip pain I suspect.
I had to say goodbye to one of mine in between the first and second hip ops last year. I never had any infection. Issues so don't worry yourself unduly about it.
Hope you get sorted soon.

@SurreyGirl
Sorry you are having trouble with your tooth... so painful... ouch!
I spoke to my consultant about infection due to dental treatment & he was very dismissive about any risk at all. I’ve got a bridge & two crowns to be done on May & he said it was perfectly ok to go ahead...
If it were me... I’d take it out! No more pain!!

Happy belated 9 months anniversary. Sorry to hear of your dental travails, but it sounds as though Hermione is blooming. Interesting how much happier she was with French cobbles and wine tasting than English commuting and desk sitting.

Thanks!! I know, “Hermione” is much happier in distant climes Being fuelled by sun, rum punch and water activity!

First world problem, I can’t resume scuba diving until I sort out the tooth. Cracked teeth, trapped air and ascending from depths does not bode well.

Went swimming again today and had the entire pool to myself for 15 minutes (bliss) until 3 others turned up including “fit bloke”.... so after 40 minutes swimming and water walking I retired to the jacuzzi to watch the scenery. Hermione is responding well to the constant movement and I am going to try to go three times a week. Haven’t dared try the “Diva Dance@ class yet, but it sounds a hoot!

Saw a guy swimming with fins so will probably do this too to build up leg strength and practise the kicks.

Sometimes with these teeth, you can just keep pouring money into them every year and eventually have to get them out anyway. I have one I plan on doing a bit later this summer. Not really flared yet but I can tell it's coming because it's crumbling at the base.

Did you name your hip Hermione? My brother named my first hip Helen so I named the second one Troy.

One thing I like about being middle aged is that the good looking young men don't pay any attention to me so I can look all I like. My 93 year old mother feels the same.

Yes I did name my hip!
That made me laugh @KathyD ! Just as well the Fit Bloke is not a mind reader. I am only human :)

@Carriemay60 , I will get the tooth scanned to see how bad the underlying crack is and then make a decision. Wish I didn’t have this but that’s the way the cookie (tooth) crumbles!

Bank holiday here and a long trip to Devon to see friends. Should be fun.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Have it out @SurreyGirl ! There's no pain like toothache and it always flares up at the worst time. Holidays especially. Have it out and a nice implant. I spoke to my dentist about infection after THR and antibiotics. He said they don't even give them now for patients with heart problems. Said no evidence that dental work could affect either.

Wellthis tooth has cost me £200 now and I have been referred to a specialist. I think having it out and an implant is the way to go. Unfortunately I will need sedation so it is not going to be cheap! Either that or rum, medicinal herbs, a door and a piece of string?!

I can’t afford to have it play up on holiday and can’t dive with a cracked tooth.

Meanwhile “Hermione the Hip” is getting so much better now. I am only using the Leki over longer distances or steep slopes. Much better than in years and my back is getting better too.

And here is a picture of the Swanky pool at the Swanky Health Club! I was lucky enough to have the pool to myself for 30 minutes the other day...no sign of “Fit Bloke” :-(. Maybe the sight of me scared him off. Managing the pool ladder much better now. There are no steps into the pool. Ladders only!

Your posts about swimming and water exercises have inspired me as far as getting the timetable for my local council pool - no swanky club convenient to me. And I also splashed out on a swimsuit, as my old one had perished in the drawer some years ago. I haven’t yet taken the plunge. The slipperyness and hard surfaces scares me a bit. But if there was some attractive scenery to take my mind off it....

You seem to be doing very well, other than the dreaded dental problem. You mentioned a trip to Devon to see friends, but on another thread IIRC you mentioned house hunting... looking to relocate post retirement maybe? And I think pastures was mentioned, eyeing a possible new career as cowgirl?

@Klassy I will get back in more detail later but have a pair of cheap swimming shoes from Amazon which stop me slipping.

Example here and they vary in price and style. Mine are very quick drying.

A few comments on the swimming. It is really helping. My frog kick is appalling but that is down to restrictive hip movement but backstroke was amazing and I surprised myself . Originally I kept going to one side as the hip leg not as strong as the right but only took three weeks to even up and is going really well.

I no longer count lengths but if I can spend 30-40 mins continuous movement in the pool then that is good enough for me. Hoping to get up to an hour. Pre op I could only manage 15 minutes.

Couldn’t get into the jacuzzi as the “hog-a-lots” -a rather selfish couple -were in there for 45 minutes and I didn’t fancy it after that! .

The steam room was bliss though. Thinking about braving the gym next week - maybe the recumbent bike to start with. I am very mindful not to overdo it.

“Fit Bloke” turned up, swam 20 minutes and then went into the sauna. I was far to shy to join him. He has a lovely stroke rythmn and swimming style however ;-)

Thinking of @Klassy comments, my swimsuit is really tatty - almost transparent in places - so think a new one needed. After all I have to break it in prior to the next holiday xx

@Klassy hope you are feeling better....it is Easy to overdo it in the pool as not having gravity to deal with makes one feel the muscles are better than they are. I learnt that the first time I did it!

 Your thread is giving me fits of laughter. I can so relate to all you are saying. Need to take honest assessment of my swim gear. It’s probably time for all new. I will wait tell I hit 3 month mark, but can imagine the muscles benefit is substantial. There is also the view benefits.

It also helps me sleep! After a busy week at work I went swimming last night and then demolished a bowl of pasta with hot pesto sauce and cheese when I got home . Woke up at 12:30 pm and hubby bought me a cup of tea and I took to the bath. Ummmmmm 1.5 hours later of bathing and catching up with friends on the internet-thingy hubby come upstairs. “I suppose it is time for a glass of wine?”. Bless him. He has his moments.

Wine now balanced precariously on the bath and contemplating breakfast! 14:30... somehow my rather ambitious plans to tidy the downstairs office is not going to happen today. Happy Weekend Hippies xx
