MUA Limited ROM - CRPS

So I called the shop and although the part says "L" the owner assured me it was for the right. So, I tried it on my bike - so close but I could still not get a full rotation. BUT, it works on my recumbent. Yippee! I'm pedalling!!! The Pedal Pendulum works!!

I thought I should expand on the pedal pendulum as it is a miracle product for me. I have yearned for "normal" exercise for months. My bend in my right knee has been 50-70 degrees since my operation. It usually rests around 57 degrees. I have full mobility in my left. The pedal pendulum allows me to do a full rotation with my left leg and a smaller rotation with my right. I know that it will help with my strength and mental well being and hopefully with mobility too. My next challenge is my outdoor bike. Bring it!!!!

Wow!! That's great. What a cool device!! Happy for you that you get to use your recumbent bike!!

Yes, wonderful to use my recumbent bike again! Insert happy dance here.

I went to my GP yesterday and was referred to a new OS in Vancouver. He was recommended by a pain specialist so I am hoping he has more experience with #CRPS than our local Surgeons.

My insurance company approved a mobility scooter. I am dismayed that I require one but am looking forward to getting out and about minus most of the pain.

The last month has been difficult as I come to terms with the fact that my disability may be permanent. Thankfully, I have wonderful friends and a supportive family as well as all you Bone Smarties. :loveshwr:

:yay:outstanding Wrangler! glad to hear!!
here's a link for you..even though it doesn't specifically mention TKR it does talk extensively about knee flexion, mobility, stiffness and swelling and lack of mobility due to swelling. and I have one of these machines!!! I was a dealer rep many years ago. I just had my first session on the machine so ill let you know if I think its doing any good. I truly think it cant harm but please read when you have time. even the sections about issues that have nothingto do w/knees is great!!

I have an appointment on Tuesday with the new OS. I am also pleased to report I have found an extra 10 degrees of bend. I started cognitive behavioural therapy and also started eating a high protein, low carb diet. Not sure if the extra ROM is due to time, counselling or diet but happy just the same. I still have trouble walking but I'm getting closer.

Happy knees!!

WHAT!!??? that is outstanding..so happy to hear that. When you say "high protein" what exactly does that mean? 1g per pound of bodyweight or just eat a lot of meat and protein powder.
is the only thing new the diet? and why the therapy? again, congrats wrangler!

It's been a while since I last checked in. @KameronSteele I am doing the Ideal Protein diet. Unfortunately, my ROM just shifted - I lost 10 degrees on extension and gained 10 degrees in flexion. I am around 65 most days. I can get around without a stick but tend to toe walk so I use a cane to ensure I heel to toe it. I still have a pretty noticeable limp.
I saw a new OS and he agrees with my pain doc that another surgery will flare up the CRPS. I see the OS again in March.
I am still trying all kinds of therapies but my knee is still stiff and sore.
I am optimistic that time will be the key to my recovery. In the meantime, I want to talk to my doc about a mobility limiting brace to see if I can cross country ski. I would be happy to take baby steps on the trails just to be active again.
I hope y'all have a great Christmas and happy new knees!

Just thought I would pop in with an update.

I have just found out I need another surgery on my "good" knee - I have a congenital tripartite patella and one of the segments has broken off and is causing lots of grief. My OS wants to do a scope and then make a small incision to fish out the fragment. I am so afraid that the #CRPS will spread to my other knee. I don't have a date yet but it will likely be in May.

My CRPS knee is slowly gaining more flexion - I am at around 81 degrees now. I got in a 10 minute bike ride last week using my pedal pendulum. It was still hard and hurt but it felt SO GOOD! I will try and get out again soon as exercise is so good for one's mind and soul.

Happy Easter!

Wrangler, it is so good to hear from you! I'm sorry you need another surgery; your concern is understandable. I hope the CRPS does not spread- what a nasty, confounding diagnosis.

Thanks @Clipless - my pain doc is on board so hopefully he will have a good plan.

Feeling accomplished - bike ride and a short walk today. I am determined to get more exercise. I just need it.

Hi Wrangled: read your thread with much interest as it sounds a lot like my story. I am now in my fourth week of post-op and wonder why I'm not physically more active. This bothers me. My first pt was horrible- ran out of rehab crying hysterically. Then I found this forum and everything started to change. I
Realize now that recovery is going to take much longer than I anticipated. Also, like you, no flexion in my knee. Still working on that.
I know you're hanging in there.
I'll be following you're thread to see how your doing-
Di

@Newbie tkr I am sorry you are experiencing limited ROM and pain but I am so glad you found this forum. There are so many great people here and the advice is golden. I think one of the biggest things for me was slowing down and taking one day at a time. Everyone progresses at a different rate and it can be very disheartening reading about or seeing others that are dancing circles around you. BUT it will progress ...
Four weeks is still really early in your recovery but I completely understand your frustration. Keep positive and check in to Bone Smart frequently it will keep you sane.

Update:
I had surgery on my left knee in April of 2017. The surgeon removed a piece of my patella that had broken off. Despite having a nerve block the #CRPS spread. Thankfully, through nerve blocks, massage and PT I have managed to regain most of my mobility in that knee. ROM 15 degrees loss of extension - 130 degrees of Flexion.
My right knee is still more limited. ROM 20 degrees loss of extension and 95 degrees of Flexion.

I have OA in my left knee and am hoping I won’t need a replacement any time soon.

All the best in your recoveries!!
