I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees at the age of 33. I am at the point now that I need new knees badly. I visited a surgeon last year that said he wouldn't touch me until I lost 20 pounds. This was after he lectured me about how horrible my eating habits must be and that most patients, before even seeing him, have their stomachs stapled or other weight loss surgery. He didn't even give me a chance to talk before he dismissed me. I was at 270 pounds.
I decided that I would try really hard to lose weight so that I could get my life back. I have successfully lost, in the past year, a total of 4 pounds. That's right, 4 pounds. I can't move much, so it is almost impossible for me to burn calories. I would need to cut back to about 500 calories a day to lose weight. I can't do that.
I have an appointment with a different surgeon next month. I am hoping with all my heart that he will help me.
I have an amazing husband that has changed his way of living because of me. No more hikes in the woods, no more vacations, no more biking all day. Now, he did make me a pedal-assist bike, so I can go for a while, but it isn't anything like we were used to.
We have 2 sons, ages 20 and 17. I hate them seeing me act like an 80yo. I feel angry at myself at times. I am hurting so bad. I think of the future and wonder if I will be able to dance at their weddings or babysit their children.
I hope this new surgeon helps me.
