    TKR Jeanienewknee's Recovery thread

I’m walking about 3 miles, recumbent bike, or elliptical 5-6 days a week. I’m doing isometric quad exercise, 2 sets of ten, as well as up one stair backward and forward 2 sets of ten, side lying hip extension, 2 sets of ten, heel slides, same, mild squats same, bent knee with towel roll...

How long until the quad muscle fully heals? I’m doing great but still have the occasional lurching forward. I’m doing all my exercises for quad strengthening, but it’s such a weird feeling. I’m 5 months post left tkr.

I’m not concerned, just wondering if anyone else has experienced that lurching thing. Thanks for the advice, I don’t feel like I need to cut back. I was walking 5-6 miles before surgery, albeit painfully.

Hi everyone, I am 10 weeks post left tkr. I’m doing great but have a question about my quad muscle. I’m able to walk about 2 miles close to my pre surgery speed but once in awhile my knee will lurch forward. I don’t lose balance, but it is disconcerting. Also I get tightness, not really pain...

There is hope!! For all of you in the first two weeks from hell, it does get better! I am 4 weeks post op and I’m finally sleeping 4 hours at a time. I had my 4 week check with my OS and he was impressed with my progress. All restrictions lifted and I am free to drive and swim which makes me so...

I thought I would share my experience with elevating, in the hope it will help someone else. I am 19 days post op. I’m very pleased with my progress and have 0 extension and 123 flexion. My second week was awful with greatly increased swelling and stiffness in spite of icing and elevation. When...

As much as I read and prepared, the ups and downs are tough. Thank you, I need lots of validation that something isn’t wrong. I will continue to ice and elevate. Patience is not a strong suit of mine.

Thanks but yes I’m icing and elevating all the time. Feels like my knee will pop open at any moment. Ugh.

Post op day 8. I started so well, but I’m feeling a bit discouraged. About day 6 I noticed increased pain, swelling and stiffness, plus all the operative bruising started to show up. I’ve lost my flexion, can’t make it to 90, but my extension is still zero. I’m icing, elevating, doing gentle...

Thanks everyone. I’m focusing on ice and elevation and less exercise today. I so appreciate the reassurance. It is major trauma!

Day 5 post op. I didn’t feel like I did too much and was encouraged by PT to take it slow, but increased swelling and muscle soreness today. Currently icing and elevating, but is this normal?

Yes. The swelling bugs me the most.

I had my first PT today. I’m doing great and he agreed with the myth busting talked about here. Zero and 117. Yay me!

Post op day three. Doing my exercises, icing, elevating. Recovery is a full time job. I’m taking scheduled Tylenol and meloxicam which are enough for me, although I’m sure everyone is different in their pain control requirements. After my postoperative nausea and hypotension resolved, I’ve felt...
