Has anyone information on when it is safe to fly after THR? The opinions are variable from 6 weeks to not earlier than 3 months. My THR is July 6th, and our first family reunion, which I am sponsoring, requires a flight fo 5 hours (6?) on August 25th.

My ortho said I could take aspirin, OK, but my realy concern is that in bad weather the "stay in seat" sign can remain on for up to 3 hours, meeaning no walking & aiding the circulation. We are doing a trans Pacific flight, so we really can't land anywhere.

I would particularly appreciate feedback from those who have flown, or medical specialists.

Another concern is leaving home right in the middle of my physical therapy. Again, has this happened to any of you?

I must make a decision soon, so thank you in advance! dawabbit is 64

dawabbit, welcome to BoneSmart! I am sure Jo will be along soon to give you the medical opinion on travel so soon after your op.

But I can tell you from my experience my surgeon did not let me fly in that time frame. I too was planning on going to a family reunion on a transatlantic flight. Since DVT is a hazzard of flying and the chances of it increase after joint surgery I was advised to postpone the trip.

There is also the issue of sitting for that long so soon after your op. I am nearly 6 weeks out and I still can't sit for very long. You would need to get up and move around frequently and if that is not an option I wouldn't recommend traveling.

Sorry I can't be more positive. Hope you find a good solution.

Hi, dawabbit, and welcome to BoneSmart. I think I share Jaycey's remarks that you'd find it a very tough journey even if that 'stay in seat' sign stayed all all the time. And given the higher risk of DVT/PE, I'd not want to risk it.

From the sound of your post, you're not really all that enthusiastic about it anyway, are you?

Hi and welcome,
If you really mean 24 days after your hip. Absolutely not, well it is your decision, but i sure would not have. I stayed in pj's in the house until my 2 week check up.
Sorry you will have to miss it, but you really will not feel like a long trip like that.

I flew at 5 and 6 weeks after a knee replacement and while I realize you are having a hip done I found the hip to be easier then the knees, overall. If your ortho is telling you to take aspirin and is okay with you flying then I would listen to him. If you are concerned about having to stay seated there are ways to move your legs while seated. You can lift, bend and stretch them. (but I'm short) While I don't think this is nearly as good as walking, it is at least a little movement to help prevent clots. You can also wear support hose.

btw, my trips were supposed to be four hours long but I had delays each way and spent many hours in the Atlanta Airport with a whole bunch of people. Each direction ended up taking 12 hours! Now that was really bad!

Somewhere there is a typo , JO. The titile says plane flight 24 days after THR. Either that is wrong or he really meant to say July for the flight date insead of August. I went with the title!!

Oh yes! I missed that, Judy :hehe: Nursey's not being very observant!

I do remember my brother meeting me with a cane, which i no longer used, but don't know when!!!

Have been away a few days, and am reading your kind responses. I was wrong on my days - it is about 6-7 weeks after THR that I would be flying.
But since I am "the hostess" of this reunion, I decided that skipping happily around in Hawaii co-odinating things would not in any way be in my best interest! (no PT, no OS). I postphoned the surgery - but now I am seriously looking into mis anterior approach. I saw my first new surgeon today, but I need to put this under a different thread about biophosphanates vs bilateral HR for AVN. I will move to there. MAny, many thanks, and sorry about the dates.
