Hi
Just joined the forum and had some questions mainly about sport after Hip Surgery.
I've always been active, Kickboxing for 30 years, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for the last 6 years, Skateboarding on and off since a child and Rock Climbing. I'm now 45 and for the last 17 months have have suffered with hip pain, to the extent i've had to completely stop kickboxing and walking causes intense pain.
I've now seen the specialist and from the MRI there are a few issues, Labrum tear, osteoarthritis and Peri-Articular Cyst formations on head and socket. We spoke about Hip arthroscopy with limited goals but he was swaying towards a full hip replacement. I'm also going to ask hip if Hip resurfacing would be a worth while option if this would allow me to more freedom of movement/success for sports.
I really want to return to sports, not to the level i'm doing them now, so not looking to get back to competition but would really like to continue skateboarding (obviously not planning on jumping down stairs etc or doing major impact tricks) and would also like to continue practicing and teaching BJJ.
Are these achievable goals if i had a full hip replacement? The specialist said there are certain movements that should be avoided, full splits, butterfly stretch and pushing the knees down, pushing the legs across the center line most of which are done involuntarily when doing BJJ especially when sparring.
As i say i've been active all my life and didnt want to get a new hip just to then sit around and do nothing.
Thanks for any info
Mark
