Surgery was Monday 8/24. So far I've had one horrible day when I fell behind on meds. Moved to rehab last night. Rehab starts today. I'm a lot nervous. Thank you to all the smarties out there posting their journey. Certainly makes the journey a little easier.

I send healing thoughts your way. Having gone to a rehab facility after surgery since I live alone, I believe it's the best place to begin recovery for both you and a caretaker. The post-op care is intense and hard to manage so I wish you well as yoi begin this next phase.

Congrats on your surgery! I had one of those days where I fell behind on my pain meds too, didn't do that again lol. Good luck with starting your rehab!

Hi @CJ220
:welome:to the recovery side!

I hope that, by now, you've got back on track with your pain medications. It is important to keep taking them on time, or else you are constantly playing catch-up with them.
I hope that rehab goes well for you. Do remember not to let them overwork your wounded knee,, or do anything that hurts you.

Here's our recommended recovery reading list. Most of the articles are fairly short, so please don't feel overwhelmed!

First are the BoneSmart mantras ....
- rest, elevate, ice and take your pain meds by the clock
- if it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physiotherapist (PT) - to do it to you
- if your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again
- if you won't die if it's not done, don't do it
- never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can go to sleep!
- be active as much as you need to be but not more than is necessary, meaning so much that you end up being in pain, exhausted or desperate to sit down or lie down!

Next is a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) thread.

Falling behind on meds is the worst. I have my iPad with me all the time and set the Clock to play a song every 4 hours, day and night, which it will do until I tell it to stop some day in the future. When it goes off I make a lunge for the meds bottle and take it right then, with or without water. I learned early that if I put it off (i.e. I'll take the meds in a couple of minutes, just want to finish what I'm doing ...) I can't always remember if I actually took the pill or not ... or maybe I even forget to take it those couple-three minutes later. My short-term memory and focus have suffered a little bit with hydrocodone!

At one point I tried the "when I feel I need it" approach but discovered soon that it takes at least a half hour to kick in, and that half hour is horrible. Since it does seem to wear off at just about 4 hours, I'm letting the clock make all the decisions. "Stay ahead of the pain" is now my mantra.

Every few days I see if I can do half a dose, in order to start tapering down. So far, the answer from my body has been a definite "no."

Good luck CJ, and I hope you are one of the ones who finds it's easier than you expected!
