I have Oxy Codone 12hr long lasting one I am taking for my soreness from surgery. Seems like I am always itching and scratching.

Re: Oxy Codone does it make you itch?

Well it didn't make me itch but I only had it in the hospital for the days before my discharge.

But I seem to recall several Smarties on this forum saying they had the problem. I am sure others will chime in soon.

I'll tag Jo and see if she can give you her expertise. @Josephine:

People can react to almost any medications! Since oxycodone is an opiate, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Duane, I know what you mean. Anything with codeine in it makes me itch. Not awful, but about an hour after taking it my arms start itching and my head starts itching, so I know what you mean.

Re: Oxy Codone does it make you itch?

Yes, Oxycodone can make you itch. My nose especially will itch when I first start taking it, and that is supposed to be an allergic reaction.

I did however have my GP take that out of my record as an allergic reaction, because after I am on it for while, it does stop.

I have never had any other side effects with it though, and it is effective for pain relief, so I'd rather suffer the itching for a awhile as a trade off for good pain management.

In rehab, they gave me a little benedryl along with the oxycodone to relieve the itching. You'll sleep like a baby with that cocktail :th_heehee:...

Being an oncology nurse Oxycodone is in my area of expertise. Yes, Oxycodone can make you itch due to the release of histamine. You can take Benadryl or Claritin and that should help with the side effects.

Several people have posted that Oxy had made them itch---and that Benadryl was a help---or switching to another pain med, too. It didn't bother me; but a few have reported a type of allergic reaction to it.

just chiming in and agreeing with Oldbones and Janet....as a Med Surg Nurse, I see this often...Benadryl is usually given to counteract the itching with good effect.

Yes Jo. When I was Surgical Buyer at the local hospital, it was called Med Surg as well. Perhaps a local thing newhip? Or specific to the US perhaps?

Oh in Supplies we have the Medical & Surgical Equipment supplies/catalogue, etc. But I thought newhip said she is a med/surg nurse which I've not known before.
