Study: Most patients gain weight after TKR

I lost weight right after the surgery, couldn't figure out why. I have become very active since and my quads have now, after years of atrophy, filled out. I've been working out steadily, and put on weight. Now I'd like to loose about 20 pounds.

Maybe when they stop clicking we should worry!

    TKR progress

Mine clicks and clunks too. Annoying. Being mechanical by nature, sounds in moving joints aren't good, means something in there isn't smooth and might be prematurely causing wear. But it seems that noisy tkr's are the norm. So we have to live with it.

    Any alternative to TKR surgery?

Re: Is there any deadline for having TKR done? I want to warn you or anyone on "sucking it up and waiting" The longer you wait, the more bone tissue is lost. The more good bone that is lost, the less the surgeon has to work with. The less the surgeon has to work with, the weaker the end result...

    TKR New knee with issues

At 6 months my new knee makes a racket. Clunking and clicking. Everybody says its normal. Just like Jugornot my other knee keeps me up at night. If my new knee stays the same, like it is now, I'm a happy camper. Big difference and I'm glad I did it. But again, the pessimist in me repeats, " If...

    Clicking and Clacking?

It seems like many of us after TKR experience knee noise. Can someone please explain what causes this? Is it harmful? Will it continue forever and ever? Should we be concerned?

    SynviscONE

Mimi, I believe your right. Putting off TKR when really needed can more harmful in the long run. The longer bone on bone rubs, and erodes, the less good bone material the Dr. has to work with. The less the bone, the Dr. has to work with, the weaker the new knee will be.

    Clicking....

Although I'm glad that a thicker spacer surgically installed is a possibility. I like the "give it time" solution much better.

    SynviscONE

After having the three shot series many times, I had Synvisc one. No good for me. The one shot was three times as painful. They had to inject much more fluid in an a bone on bone joint.

    Mountain Hiking

I've got to say that archery is on top of my list. It's something in life I really enjoy. As far as mountain hiking, I'm gonna keep doing it, but will make more aggressive use of trekking poles. Now I'm really going to make them dig in especially on side hills and going down hill. I think that...

    Clicking....

At four months post tkr my knee is clicking and clunking horribly. Just a thought: My range of motion has been about 110* for the past 25 years. Now after tkr, its about 140* give or take. My ligaments , tendons and quad muscles must be really stretched out. The new knee is allowing me to...

    Mountain Hiking

Check out this link: http://journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/Abstract/2000/04000/Endurance_sports_after_total_knee_replacement__a.1.aspx They make a comparison to jogging which is not recommended and hiking downhill.

    Mountain Hiking

I have recently read that downhill walking (hiking) puts a load equal to jogging on the knees. Jogging is not a recomended activity for tkr. I'm only 4 months into my new knee. I want to take care of it. No revision for me if possible. I get bummed out when I read about the O.K activities like...

    Flexation Zimmer Nex-gen CR Flex

Jsykas, you sound like me. I think we are our worst enemies. Too hard on ourselves. Like you, I don't know how hard to push our new knee. My gut feeling on this is to take it slow. The last thing we want to happen is to wear out the new knee too fast and go in for a revision. That scares me. Now...

    "Crossing over" posts

I learned something going through this process. The longer you wait, the more damage is done to the joint. The more damage done to the joint, the less good strong bone the Dr. has to work with. The more strong bone the Dr. has to work with, the better job he can do. The better the job, the...
