Concerned about leg atrophy waiting for my THR

I waited a year before my first THR and my muscles were atrophied. I could not straighten my right leg at all. Even lying down, I had to bend my leg for comfort. My surgeon was very aware and was adamant that I lie on my stomach for 1/2 hour daily starting 2 weeks after surgery. It took me...

    Happy again (mostly)

Hi Joan, It's great to hear you are doing so well. I just wanted to say that my OS asked me if I wanted PT. I accepted, but then changed my mind before it got started, because I was doing so well on my own. I'm glad you asked that question because I was curious about that too! Thanks! :)

    9 weeks tomorrow!!!

Thanks Tim, It really does feel like a new start. I do still feel like I'm healing, especially after being busy and on my feet all day. I'm feeling pretty stiff along with being tired right now. I've been blessed to be able to get plenty of rest during my recovery and today was the first time...

    9 weeks tomorrow!!!

Hi everyone! Tomorrow makes 9 weeks for me. I just spend about 3 1/2 hours tidying up a softball field and I am ready for bed! whew! My hip is doing great mostly. I have some stiffness still in the morning and I still get really tired around dinnertime. I've been off prescription pain meds...

    Sore Knee.

Cathy, it does sound just like the pain I had. Josephine, is there equipment used during surgery that can cause bruising there? I'm thinking something to hold the leg in place? Just curious.

    Sore Knee.

Cathy, I had the knee pain also. It was towards the back on the side of the operated leg. I noticed it especially when I slept. I told my OS about it at my 2 week follow up and he said if it didn't stop, it may be my back? I am happy to report that it went away. No back problems needed...

    When can I kneel?

Josephine, I didn't violate the 90 degree rule. I knelt down on 1 knee and never went past 90 degrees. Could you be thinking of squatting? That is something I wouldn't try. :flwr: I appreciate you all. :lvshwr:

    When can I kneel?

Hi BertJ, I am 5 1/2 weeks out and I have knelt. It is not easy getting up, though. :th_heehee: My OS is very strict with lifetime restrictions, but he never said anything about kneeling. I kneeled on my surgical leg, and had something to pull up on when I rose. It's great when we feel...

    life time precautions

You're so welcome, Hipper. If my OS knew I was tying my own shoes, I don't think he would be happy. :th_heehee: I appreciated his conservative approach, but I know my hip better than he does. I would be very cautious for awhile. It's easy to get over confident in our quest to get back to...

    Two weeks after???

Hi Loz, I agree with the others. I'm 3 weeks, 3 days out and am walking un aided mostly. I overdid it yesterday, so using my crutches for a day to give my leg a rest. The gentle exercises are best and work beautifully with lots of rest. I had lots of help so I have rested a lot. Every day...

THR 1 year and 1 month and counting

Re: Certain PT moves cause PAIN! I agree that you might need more rest. The muscle spasms are not fun. I still have them a little when I try to straighten my leg, lying flat on my back. I would definitely let your OS know about the pain. Everyone is different. I hope this works itself out...

3 weeks and walking without aid?

Hey Songlady, I cannot imagine walking a mile right now. It's been pretty cold out since my surgery, and now with snow, I probably haven't walked more than a mile in total. Wow! My plan is to get back to the gym and start on the recumbant bike after the new year. It does feel good to get out...

3 weeks and walking without aid?

Jaycee, I'm a wimp with pain so I would've been that way on here too. lol My OS released me to drive as long as I have no affects from the meds. Driving was a breeze due to it being my left hip. I have gotten lots of rest since I've had lots of help. (My oldest and her 4 kids moved in a few...

3 weeks and walking without aid?

Hi Rebecca, You're not far from me. I'm in Winston Salem. It sounds like we've been fortunate. I think I will get out my cane and take it with me for awhile, just in case.

3 weeks and walking without aid?

Thanks Jaycey, I was so nervous going into this surgery! It seems though, that in the last few days, I've turned a corner. I just don't want to get too confident and mess things up.

3 weeks and walking without aid?

Josephine, We have 6 inches of snow. lol It's the first white Christmas here in some 40 years. I did take my crutches with me, but when I got there, I worried that the crutches might actually be more cumbersome, trying to avoid the many patches of ice. My daughter stood close the whole time...

    life time precautions

hipper, I also have lifetime precautions. My first THR was 7 years ago, and I can tell you that I mostly forget I have had a hip replacement. I still cannot sit cross legged, and I try not to twist, but otherwise, I'm pretty flexible. I agree with the others, that your surgeon is being ultra...
