Are you by chance a diabetic? I often relate "boils" or caruncles to diabetes or is it your body dealing with the stress that your body has been through???
Re: Anaemia
Just remember when taking iron it must be taken on an empty stomach for it to be absorbed. Someone mentioned taking it with orange juice which is an excellent suggestion because ascorbic acid helps iron absorption.
Hi there! I've been reading your posts about your horrible ordeal. Do you live here in Columbia? Who did your surgery at MIZZOU? Have you considered a second opinion at Columbia Orthopaedic Group? Please let me know. Oldbones
I'd like to discuss your post op visit today. I think 4 weeks is a little premature to attempt to walk without some sort of assistive device such as a cane. When I went back to work after my THR I was still using a cane and repeating my mantra with each step "heal toe, heal toe, etc. So don't...
Re: This is my story
Jo, you are so very correct regarding iron overload. This, unfortunately is the population of people that I see on a daily basis. MDS is probably the most common.
Re: This is my story
I would like to address the question regarding iron overload after having multiple blood transfusions. Iron overload IS NOT easily corrected. There are only two medications available in the US (with another on the way) that are used to treat iron overload. One is a daily...
In 2007 I had a left Birmingham hip replacement and had very poor pain control. The physician that was managing my post op pain prescribed Percocet alternating with Norco. In 2009 I had the Birmingham removed and I had a conventional hip replacement. I had a different physician (the doc that I...
I'm so glad to finally see a post regarding BHR. I had one in 2007 and 18 months later it had to be replaced with a conventional hip replacement. In hindsight I wish I had gone with the traditional hip the first time. I've not had a minute's trouble with it. The BHR sounds so good, bone...
Renate, I'm an oncology nurse and in oncology we use a lot of steroids. Prednisone 20mg is about middle of the road as far as strengths go. I think the other medication that you were trying to think of is Methotrexate which is a very old chemotherapy that is hardly ever used anymore for oncology...
In regard to SSI issues I can tell you the experience that my brother had. He's 58years old and has carcinoid which causes a fair amount of pain, diarrhea and facial flushing. He applied for disability and because of his cancer diagnosis he qualified for disability. He completed the...
Re: Oxy Codone does it make you itch?
Being an oncology nurse Oxycodone is in my area of expertise. Yes, Oxycodone can make you itch due to the release of histamine. You can take Benadryl or Claritin and that should help with the side effects.
I would like to respond to your question about your high platelet count. Usually a high platelet count is a response mechanism that our bodies produce when there is an insult to our blood. In your case you probably are a tad bit anemic since your surgery so therefore your bone marrow in response...
Andrew, I hope I'm not too late to post a reply to your dilema about HR vs THR. Having been the recipient of both procedures I would definitely opt for THR. I had a Birmingham for about 18 months in May '07 and started experiencing pain in December 2008. I went to my OS who did x-rays that...
Re: Metal on Metal Hips
It has been my experience that a revision was easier for me than the original hip replacement. In May 2007 I had a Birmingham hip replacement. Because of the Birmingham replacement going south on me I had a regular hip replacment in January 2009. To me, the revision...
Could someone please direct me to a thread regarding MOM implants and the reports that are coming out of Oxford about pseudotumors especially in women. I saw my OS last week who shared with me the problem that is now arising out of MOM implants. Granted, it's a small percentage (1-3%) but it's...
Let's all raise our glass in a toast to my hip! It's been one year today and life is great and getting better everyday. These are just a few words of encouragement to those of you considering a replacement or to those who have recently had a replacement. It's rough in the beginning but so well...
I had this several months ago and it turned out to be an inflammation of the bursa. I saw my OS who gave me a steroid injection (boy, is that fun!) into the bursa and within just a couple of days it was gone. I hope that this helps.
